Can anyone tell the difference? Are there visual clues? I know record was more polished, but what about the top... some posts look more roughed out by hand while other have a smooth appearance... including pre-insertion line posts I have seen (been scrutinizing wool jersey).

Anyone? PLEASE!

Actually I think the GS is more like sand-cast. I think also some later records were real nicely polished, also I think there's a "GS" somewhere on the post. I would think Deanster might have some input.

My '79 GS post just has the "campy" lettering on the front and "27.2" on the rear. It polished up very nicely (insertion scratches took some emery cloth work) and I can't tell any diff btwn it and a known NR post from the same era. Maybe when new the NR had more finish polishing?

I think it's only surface finish. I used to think the positioning of the Campagnolo logo was in a different place but I'm unsure of that.

So far there's some hard data and a bunch of groping. I think my buddy's Trek has a GS, and if so I can compare it to my Masi's known NR. Will take a day or two.

There was no Gran Sport seat post in the early 70's.

The Gran Sport seatpost came out with the Gran Sport brakesets, they finished off the Gran Sport or Nuovo Gran Sport ensemble. The only the rear derailuer got the Nuovo typography addition. the earliest G.S. seat posts were essentially Record posts in a green box. Later there was an evolution to a coarser texture above the machined cylinder, and the machining was done faster, so there were more visible machining marks. around '79 some posts had G.S. stamped into them... my guess to help tell the difference. They were only minimally cheaper to buy wholesale individually.

A bit later the Record post got the alloy lower cradle ears and the adjustment bolt barrel nuts were machined at the ends a bit differently.

But beware, things kind of flopped back and forth, stocks of these parts did not get rotated sometimes, so detail changes appear hap hazard.
