Fifty Plus (50+) - Take The Test

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Same here, but a good public service announcement, don't you think?

I flunked too. Good public service announcement but unless someone is going to play it on television 25 times a day in will go unnoticed by the majority of drivers. We as cyclists need to find the funding to drive this message home day after day after day.

A very good one.

Saw a different version before and was amazed. I didn't believe it. I thought it was a trick, or a cheat at first.
This one I guess I knew what was coming and so I got it all.

That's the whole point of the test/public message, to train people to look before their brains filter out what can't be there. If you could teach this in school, the next generation of cyclists would have a higher survival rate.

Sometimes this is done in front of an elevator, and while you're busy counting a gorilla comes along and gets on the elevator.

I think that the gorillas and bears are a bad idea. There is no connection between a bear and a bicyclist unless the bear is on a bicycle. Instead of moonwalking, perhaps he should have been on a foldie. Even though the message is in print, it is not reinforced by any visuals. Great topic, but I think it was put in a way that you will remember the ad and forget the message.

Agreed. I think the message is how easily "We look but do not see".
It would have driven the point home better to have stated this in summary.
I liked it, but yes I would have to do some training for me not to get caught up in what I am expecting to see. That would be a good thing.

I only partly agree with the message, but the test is not analogous to what a good driver should be doing. In the test our attention was deliberately diverted. If someone tells you to look right and then says, "Aha, you didn't see what is on the left" well, that's not much of a test. If I had been continually scanning the video just as I scan in front, near and far and to the right and left when I am driving, then there is a high probability that I would have seen the bear even if I hadn't been looking for it specifically. The message is really that if your attention is diverted, you cannot drive safely. That's why there should be a ban on cell phone use in cars.
