My wife's rule of thumb:
Never do a ride with the word "DEATH" in the title.

Pretty smart if you ask me. But congrats to you anyway.

I'm in, too. Kind of frightening, since now I know I really need to get in shape for it, plus figure out logistics of where to stay, what to bring, etc.

Good luck to you hearty riders. I don't exactly understand the route- does it include 2 or 3 different out-and-back rides? It seems like you retrace your steps a bunch of times, which is weird.

I didn't receive any e-mail yet but the list says I am IN!

Now I need to get in top shape fast. That will be my first Death Ride. WOOO HOOO!

It's 3 different out and backs: Once up and over Monitor Pass and down towards Nevada, then back, once up and over Ebbets Pass and down to Hermit Valley and back, and once up to the top of Carson Pass and back down (this last one is the only pass you don't do both sides of). It is a bit different than most rides that go in a big loop. The start/finish is in the middle, and you have to ride by it to get to Carson Pass (which probably results in more than a few potential 5 pass finishers saying "Enough!" and just doing 4).

I'll be thinking of you all while I'm pedaling 204 miles between Seattle and Portland that day... :p

It looks like there will be a good presence of NorCal BF. I'll be sure to wear my jersey.

Congrats! Now how was your ride to your parents?

OT: I saw Huy on my way riding from Davis to Vallejo. The ride was really awesome especially this time of year. 62 miles with moderate climbing throughout. I had a fat birthday dinner once I got there! ;)

For the death ride, most of the hotels in Markleeville and the surrounding area are booked one year in advance. When people checkout they pay for next year. Last year we were able to book a room at Sorensen's Resort in Hope Valley. So when we checked out, we booked the same room for this year. Also Sorensen's has a minimum 3 night stay policy. So we drove up there on Thursday and checked out on Sunday.

I got in too. If you want to ride and didn't get in, don't worry- there'll be plenty of spots for sale as the event gets close and people realize that they are not up for it, or something comes up.

In the past I've stayed at motels in South Lake Tahoe. Vacancies are easy to come by and it's not that far of a drive- about 40 minutes.

There's a Hilltraining group on yahoo groups that's got people training for the Death Ride. The organizer set up training rides in the bay area. I haven't ridden with them though, it's just never worked out.

I have mixed feelings about this..

Jealous because I want to do it. (Anything with "death" in the title peaks my curiosity)
Happy because I am not doing it (at least this year)

I figured if I can get a couple of century rides in this season then maybe next year I'll have the stones to try the death ride. In my ultimate wisdom I figured the death ride was a bad place to try my first century.
