Mountain Biking - hypothetical mtb expedition: year=2875

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The Russian mountain bicycle explorers Sasha Gavrilovich, Gavril Alexandrovich, and the unmistakably peculiarly vexing in appearance Larissa set off at dawn on the 30th of Thermidor, 2875.(In Nepal in the year 2875, the 12 months of the year were called by the common 20th century US names, except the Nepalese government, to make things wonderful and attractive to tourists and businessmen, changed the name of one month of the year to Thermidor, each year. This was done on an alternating basis.)

"Bessel functional analysis fading in circuitry coodinates E98309ie si SIDh," squealed a voice with a Cajun accent, from two of the axles of their bikes. (If you don't know what a Bessel function is, don't ask me. I don't either.) Almost instantaneously, Gavril erupted, almost falling into an abyss to his right, into laughter.
Larissa was hysterical: "9843ywt098h0gw98hfjkla."

Then all three mounted their Kurchatakovium Formalnost 593's and down they went, Sasha in the lead. The shocks present in their rides (the bike shocks, not the jarring from riding down a Himalayan pass), present only in the seats, pedals and handlebars, made for an intimidatingly satisfying outing, altogether. (If you, the reader, exist, and really, really want to know, the way these materials which comprised the shocks were made was by a process similar to the making of prescription Nifieuisuwiueiroqiwiprieuwoaowpwust, patented in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 2731. Of course the 3, 56, 243, 64352435624, 324621543654327 CH2 Bicuisuietoiuquet used in Nifieuisuwiueiroqiwiprieuwoaowpwust, also known by the trade name "Ulkiux-kiup," had to be modified extensively before it was fit for use as an adjunct to the rest of the rather high-tech bike components.)

After three hours and 8 minutes of electrifying thrills, the three mounted their sherpas' aircraft, which had been waiting at the base of the trail, and then they were speeding back to their cozy huts in the Urals, from which they had left the night before.

The End

In 870 years the bicycle will be an antiquated relic seen in museums an extolled as a quaint form of transportation used by our ancestors.

That's assuming, of course, that humanity or civilization lasts that long.

(You have an interesting idea for a story, but you have to make it more believeable.)

I rather doubt that the bicycle will be gone in 870 years. I don't expect it will be as popular, but bicycles offer more than just a point A to point B tool. If the existance of something more conveniant, or efficient, or faster, or flashier was truly able to displace an older technology, people wouldn't still be buying sailboats or kayaks or the like.

I expect bicycles, especially mountain bikes will still exist for exercise, to get out in the wilderness (presuming we've got some of that still) in a pleasantly simple way, and most importantly, to get the satisfaction going somewhere under your own power. Those are my main reasons for riding.

I'll bet you five bucks I end up being right...

Actually, let's make that with interest. If we figure for 3%, $5 will end up at $1.08 trillion (oh wow, I didn't expect it to be that much). :roflmao:

The interesting thing about this discussion is that none of us will be around to know whom is correct.

Factoring in inflation, you'll be lucky to get a cup of coffee for that sum. :p
