Mountain Biking - Planning to Build up a Lightweight

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Im a little out of the times with hardtails, all iv really looked at in the past year has been for building up my FS, but it weighs in at about 30lbs and is a pain to ride with my buddies who mostly do in between XC and All Mountain riding. So im looking to build up a hardtail that weighs under (or just about) 15lbs. So whats popular right now?
Requirements are, under $900, hardtail, Aluminum, want enough left over for something like XT/X9 componentry.
Wow. Just....
I REALLY hope you're kidding (well... I should say attmpted humor).

Ha! The Scott Scale LTD, a top-end carbon hardtail, has XTR and weighs in at 18 pounds. It costs $8000 to boot.
Good luck drilling all those holes in your frame.
Anything under 16 pounds will be both incredibly expensive (Actually, anything under 20 will cost a lot), no matter how old the components, and also not be capable at anything but the road. Also, 15 pounds is UCI weight limit for road bikes, just so you know....
How long have you been biking again?

Hmmm, iv seen Al hardtails that weigh 15 for like 1500 new. CF is overpriced.
That's gigantic bull-crap if I've ever heard it. Care to provide the link?
and i was hoping for a helpful first comment, silly me.
My comment was plenty helpful. I attempted to make you aware of your own foolishness. Apparently, I failed.

In the world of rhetoric, that is what would be known as an ad hominem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem). It is generally considered a fallacy and often reflects the offender's apparent incapacity for intelligent speech.

That's a hoot. If you're worth so much, then why do you only have $900 to spend on a 15lb bike? And why did you erase everything you said?

As blasphemous as it may sound, theres other things in life more neccesary than bikes, especially for a student, i erased everything i said in an effort to avoid pointless conversations such as this.
Its time to drop this post, move on with life, and go spend time with you fam.

Thats a negative my friend. I built up my Salsa Moto Rapido up the first time with like 10 year old XTR 8 speed and a 1998 Rockshox SID fork and a 2000 set of Mavic Crossrides. The whole bike weighed 22.3 pounds. It actually weighed less with that build then the current build with full XT drivetrain.
Oh yea, I only spent around $700 on the whole build. Being I got the 07 frame with a hook up from one of the dealers that I'm good friends with.

And.... can you think of a cheap way to cut off another 2.3 lbs?
Without drilling holes in stuff.

I know. He really needs to get some common sense. Literally, do you ride the short bus to school? You know, where everyone is cool because every seat is the back seat? But I got some blue stuff in my fork, I wonder what he'll think it is.
What is the blue stuff in my fork elf?

Considering that he is still in school I would bet that it is actually mommy and daddy that are worth so much money, he is just a dependent at this point. Once he makes it to the real world and earns his own paycheck he can say how much he is worth, until then it sounds like he is just a spoiled little rich kid, either that or just an all around liar.
I am worth $32 this week, according to my paycheck =[
I hate part time work.

from what I recall from college, the only cool lacrosse players were the ones who smoked alot of weed. the real serious ones were all asshats. if you are the latter, I suggest taking up cyclocross. you will fit in just perfect.
