I managed 16.7 miles today in what felt like gale force winds. Absolutely brutal riding into it for any length of time. Only wildlife I saw was a raccoon crossing the trail a little ways in front of me. I don't know why he was out and about in the middle of the day.
I hope I can ride tomorrow morning as my team plays its first soccer game of the season in the afternoon. I hope they have the scheme down or it's going to be a long afternoon!

Took out the 620 Train, which is the tandem and trailercycle with my son as stoker, daughter on the trailercycle, and me as captain. Computer malfunctioned so I don't know my mileage. Big deal, we had fun on a nice mild day cruising the streets of Beaufort.

yes, hubby and I started at Central Ridge and biked down to Inverness on the Withlachochee. We made a side trip at Hernando over to the lake. After we stopped in Inverness, we decided to check out the art show downtown. After some coffee, we headed back. Mean winds out there today! In all 21.3 miles.

I rode yesterday, about 16.7 miles. Then I went home to get ready for our first soccer game of the season, which we won 4-2! Today I just couldn't generate the ambition to face those winds again, so watched soccer and football all afternoon. I'll try not to be such a wimp tomorrow!

almost all of our rides go past the end of my street so, yesterday, while riding in a fairly large group I drifted off and called the wife to let her know when the group would be going by and she had already planned on walking down to the end of the street to watch them go by. It was pretty cool, like when the tours go through someone's home town and they let them lead out and stop to see the family, I was able to get back to the front and pull off and stop to watch everyone else go by with the family (wife, son and Grami).

Sunday 11/08/09 No...
Monday 11/08/09 Well the daughter got over to Altamonte to late to ride on Sunday so we just hung out together. Monday we got up and loaded the bikes on the car and drove to Astatula (yes I said Astatula) and parked at the post office (that is the only thing in Astatula), and started our ride to the north. The winds were out of the east @ 22 and gusting to 28 MPH so we headed north on county road 561 hoping to get a little break. We turned west at Lake Park road to county road 19 then turned south. Did I mention that the winds were out of the east @ 22 gusting to 28. We stayed on 19 and crossed Lake Harris a very narrow 2 lane bridge with 28 mile per hr. wind gusts and heavy traffic pushing us into the guard rail. When we got to state road 48 (Howey In The Hills) we turned west/north west toward Yalaha. Now the only thing in Yahala is a great German Bakery that has strudels to die for (and thank god they were open). We had two of them one apple and one berry, and coffee.
Have I mentioned yet that the winds were gusting at 28 MPH from the east. Our ride from the bakery was pretty good as we were going north to south again on some back roads back to HITH (Howey In the Hills) and the winds were out of the east at 22 to 28 MPH. Then we hit county road 455 and it was a due east ride and seemed like up hill all the way to 561. This was probably the hardest 5 mile ride I have ever done. The only thing that I could hear beside the wind in my face was my daughter screaming from behind me, how much she disliked me and never wanted to see me again.
Now for you folks that think Florida is flat you can think again. For those of you who are familiar with Sugar Loaf Mt. and Bunker Hill you know what I am saying. For those who are not familiar with the area just accept my word for it.
Did I mention the 22 to 28 MPH easterly winds. I kid you not we had to pedal to go down hill and were in our granny gear going up hill. I have a 39 on the front and a 28 on the back and I used them.
We did stop and pick some beautiful Tangerines from one of the groves that we passed.(probably lucky that we didn't get shot at).
Made it home about 2:30, all in all it was a good ride.

How was the pace? Oughta drag my fixie out and ride with them, but don't know if my fat arse could keep up without gears.
Rode with them on Saturday night - the "Freakbike Militia" ride - "Simple People on Stupid Bikes". Low riders, high bikes, fixies, cruisers, etc. Just to give you a REAL clue, one of the bikes even had a sissy bar and a propeller! :thumb:
We were one of 3 tandems, and all the bikes were lit up with glow sticks woven thru their spokes, etc. Went to the beach, (some) had pizza and brew-sters. Had a ball!

Wednesday 11/11/09 Did a completely different ride today with my daughter. Our normal rides are on the MUPs and back roads away from the hub bub of Orlando. Today we wanted to look at Camelback hydration system so we put our brightest colors on turned on all of our Super Flash blinkey lights and headed downtown to Orange Cycle. On the way back we stopped at Gabriel's Sub shop for a stacked ham and cheese sandwich. Some real bad storm clouds were overhead but we didn't get a drop. 17+ miles today and it was a good ride.

Took the fixie out today! Rode to the top of the Clearwater Causeway to watch some of cycling leg of the 70.3 Ironman triathalon.
Then sashayed on up the Pinellas Trail a ways and stopped to watch a mamma manatee with a calf that some other cyclists had spotted from a bridge. Stopped again in Dunedin for ice cream, then cut over to US 19 to make a stop in the Trek store. Beautiful day for a bike ride, but man are my legs NOT used to a fixed gear anymore! 20.3 miles of pure piddlin' fun!

Saturday 11/14/09 The daughter and I rode from Apopka to the south side of Lake Mineola. They were having a bike expo at Waterfront Park for the Horrible Hundred Ride. Many of the Bike manufactures and bike shops had booths set up for the event. The daughter took a test ride on a $6,500 Felt. WOW!!!!
I was having heart palpations over an Ice Trike (made in England) On the way home we stopped in Winter Garden at a great BBQ place called Harry and Larry's. Great BBQ brisket with beans and slaw. If you are ever in Winter Garden FL stop at Harry and Larry's.

Haven't ridden much this week as I couldn't get up the ambition to battle the wind and gloomy skies any longer! I finally got out yesterday and rode 16.7 miles. Today I started off with a soccer game (we won a 1-0 nail biter), then this afternoon I managed 22.7 miles on the '83 Puch, with a stop at the park to spy on our competitors' soccer game. Not a bad day overall, the wind was much lighter. Hopefully tomorrow will be as nice, maybe I can get in a longer ride.

Jim, thanks for the tip on the BBQ place. Hubby and I are always looking for good BBQ places. Do you know if the bike thing on Lake Mineola is still going on today?
Yesterday Hubby, son and I put bikes on truck and headed down to Homassasa for the Blues and BBQ. Well, it was a bust and we ended up sitting across the street, had some good wings and walked to the Seafood festival which was also going on. Left there and took the bikes up to the Withlachochee Bay Trail and rode it. Winds were strong from the west but it was a short 8.8 mile ride. Hopefully today we will get some more miles in.

Hey Linda,
The expo will be open until about 3 or 4 o'clock today. I would not make the trip down to the expo unless you intended to ride the south lake trail. I was a little disappointed with the number of vendors. Prices on merchandise was no bargain either. If you drive down go west on the south lake trail to the west orange trail then into Winter Garden, the BBQ (Harry and Larrys) place is on the right across the street from Wheel Works bike shop.

Jim, thanks for the info. We ended up deciding not to go because we thought there would be too much traffic and I didn't want to get into anybodys way if we decided to ride. Instead we went over to Ocali Days at the Silver River Park and walked around then rode several loops around the Baseline Trails. Only about 10 miles but enough. BBQ at Sonnys...but I am keeping the name of the place in Winter Garden for future trips. Thanks for the tip.

Sunday 11/15/09 The "D" (daughter) and I rode from the house to Panera Bread in Heathro then on to SR 46a where we took the fly over across I-4 to the Rinehart Trail. Then we headed south to Lake Mary and to The Out Spoken Bike shop to see if they had anything that we could not live without. Lucky for the charge card the did not have anything that we needed. We headed south again from the bike shop to Jax 5th ave. sports bar where we watched the Dolphins pounding the Bucks. "Poor Bucks" and devoured some super nachos. It was a good ride today with the temps in the mid 70s and clear sky's.

I finally got out and rode today. Went and walked around the flea market in Waldo first. Then took the MTB to the Gainesville Hawthorne trail and rode some of the non paved offshoots of the trail. Averaged about 6.9mph ... for a little over an hour on the bike. Weather was awesome and hardly any bugs other than some gnats. They worked on the trail a bit since the last time I rode it. Added a few 2x10" boardwalks over some lower wet areas. Rode over a couple of them, walked over a couple of them. Came home put some steaks on the grill..... and called it a day..... A REALLY NICE DAY!!
Ohhhh Just remembered the Nick I used on the forums years ago..... Same nick without the zz at front and back.... LOL .....

Nice day today so I rode down to Inverness on the Withlacoochee Trail. I brought my camera with me and wandered around a little taking pictures of the lake and whatever caught my eye. The ride home wasn't as much fun as I had a headwind for 15 miles, at least it wasn't blowing like last week! Total of 35.2 miles round trip.
As for the NFL, both the Packers and the 'Fins won, so I'm a happy camper!
I really don't care, but live close enough to G'ville and Nease to be tired of it all by now.

hehe! I really don't care either, but I have to bust Slo Spokes chops, cause my wife is a Marshall alumni, (bitter rivals of WVU).
There's a pretty big contingent of fixed gear riders in the Tampa Bay area. I find it amusing, as I used to ride a track bike on the road as well as piddled around on the Encino velodrome, (Ca.) way back in the 70's, and now all the dreadlocked/tatooed young guns think it's something "new"! They're amazed when they see an old fat man sit up and take his hands off the bars in a track stand!
Bound to be a shop around G'ville selling fixies. Maybe you should try and get them to promote a fixie "shop ride", or get a local club to include a fixie ride. That'd help it grow.

I don't often due this but since you and your wife like to ride I am going to give her a pass on being a MOOOUUUU Thundering Herd alumni.

No, but cross the bridge in Huntington and you're in her hometown, Proctorville, Ohio. (No proctologist jokes, please, everyone ... she's heard them all!) We do have to admit that she has relatives that are WVU, though. Hmmmph. There's no accounting for taste! :innocent:
Showed up and rode 20.3 miles last night with the fixie crowd out of Hands On Bicycles here in Clearwater. My quads were screaming by the time we got back. Not at all used to riding the fixed gear anymore!
And what a culture shock. I talked another old roadie friend of mine into showing up, (he'd just gotten a fixie from Bikes Direct), and what a difference from our usual fare of casual, polite, organized road rides! These guys were unruly, helmet-less, barely legal light-wise, all over the road when it was clear, utilizing the sidewalk if necessary to maintain forward progress, cyclo-crossing thru the grass, shouting up the occasional impatient motorist, etc, etc. One stretch of the ride was across the East/West trail, which is NOT a rail trail. It is full of twists and turns, 20 foot high rollers, smaller whoop-de-doos, single-file style narrow bridges and a couple of 10 percent climbs thrown in just to see if you're REALLY into riding that fixed gear!
It was absolutely pitch black in large sections interspersed with the blinding outfield lights of three different ball fields we pass behind, and I was the only one running lights with which you could actually see the road. But naturally, the young guns simply couldn't stay behind this 57 year old, so off they went! Everyone made it out the other end, but to be honest, I was amazed! (Oh, and yes, this trail is "officially" closed at night.)
Basically, these guys reminded me of myself back in the early 70s. Back then there was no "political correctness" involved in cycling. No one wore helmets, (there were no hard shell helmets to begin with ... just leather strap "hair net" helmets), we took every advantage and short cut, rode anything less than a century ride in cut-offs and t-shirts, and cycling was a true expression of individuality. For me, this ride was a true "blast from the past", and I had a ball! My other roadie friend was somewhat more conservative in his evaluation of the night's event! (He never rode in the 60s or 70s!) :D

I rode 22.7 miles today on the Puch. Wind was from the side, so it felt like a headwind both directions. It was nice though, saw quite a few Gopher Tortoises again. They seem to be real active lately.
Oops, forgot to post on Saturday... Friday night drove down to Largo to crash at the inlaws'. Saturday morning headed into the blinding sunrise and fog to Bartow for the local Rotary club's "Ride of Your Life". For a first ride it was pretty well done. They could have used a bit more signage on a couple of the turns and one of the sag stops wasn't marked well enough - organizers took notes and said they'd fix that next year. I rode the metric century, and was woefully unprepared for the work involved. The forecast had said just mild breezes, not 20MPH winds!?!?! I fell in with a small group of docs from Tampa who let me join up with them. Without our little paceline I'd have died halfway in. :) We made it around the 62 miles in about 5 hours, counting the rest stops. There was a nice spread of pasta and salads waiting for the finishers, as well as a pretty cool car show going on downtown. I'll definitely be back next year for this one, hopefully in better shape! :)

Sorry for the delayed response and full quote, I changed email on BF and couldn't post.
Anyway... I live in Orange Park which is a bedroom community of Jacksonville. There is a small reckless hipster group in Jax, but only a few of us "mature" riders out here (I'm 40 btw). I keep trying to spread the word, but the "hipster connection" to track bikes and lack of a drome makes it difficult. That, however is a discussion for a different thread.
Speaking of fixie and riding, I've not riden my fixie in a bit, but I saw one of our lbs regulars commuting on his pista to NAS JAX during our early weds am ride. Ride was 45'ish miles through some really dense fog. I had some rough times on the way back and took a short cut, I'm starting to feel the effects of my HH effort and desided not to ride this morning and might go out later on my fixie conversion.

That message wasn't there last night when I logged on... LOL Doesn't really matter i guess.... Just get used to seeing something one way for so long.
Anyway the only real gripe I have (and maybe I missed it) is that I have to make 2 clicks to get to the last post in the thread now instead of 1. For instance there used to be a little "last" button next to the "did you ride today thread". Now I don't see it, I have to click on the thread first and then click the last button.....
All is good.... Going to try and get a ride in before dark...... TRY I WILL..... Do I might.... LOL
LOL ---------> We are aware of the issue with the "Last Post" button. The issue will be resolved in a couple hours.
We are currently rebuilding thread information. ............

Ahhh. I don't do either. I have my settings done so that I always see the last post in a thread first. Seems easier to click to go back to a thread's beginning the few times I need to do that, rather than to click to go to the latest comment everytime.
My settings, (that particular one as well as my subscribed threads), seems to have held in the transfer, and I guess that's a good thing right now cause clicking on "Settings" button just times out for me right now. Everybody's playing, I guess.

I love the new format.
I rode today, but I'm only doing half days until my knee gets better.

Yes, 30+ miles, great day for a ride today. Weather was just picture perfect today. Mid 70s when I got back home.
30.24 (s)miles today
404.08 (s)miles this month
6070.88 (s)miles this year
14 ride days this month (Nov.)
All is well in Slo Spoke Jim's world.

Nice day again, although the 10 miles of headwind (even a light one) on the way home is getting old! Did the usual 22.3 miles today, saw more tortoises, a couple were standing in the middle of the trail!

Took a break yesterday, thursday, first break in like 3 weeks and after the HH. My knees were a little sore and I'd already done about 100 mile between mon-weds. Getting ready for the am ride and then the fixie commute this pm with lights for the ride home. My bright Cygo Lite should be nicely charged now, no excuse for anyone not seeing me on the way home tonight.

Hammered out 40 miles solo on my road bike with perfect weather. Warm enough for shorts and short sleeves, but cool enough to keep the water cool.
