The legs are still tight even today so I didn't ride and I might not ride tomorrow, although I hate to take 2 days off in a row. We will see...
I am with you on taking my hands off of the bars, as a kid it was nothing to ride around with no hands but I am to old and heal to slow to do that now. I see the guys on the tour doing that and I just close my eyes, ohhh to be young again.

I am feeling inspired to start posting in this thread... though I generally ride the same route on the weekdays, it takes me through good old-fashioned Louisiana swamps and farmland. There are some really nice shots I could get on some of the roads.
Any other riders in here from southern LA? :)

Welcome to the thread FunkyStickman .... Post, post and post some more... Everybody that posts in this thread helps keep me motivated..
I'm the same way Slo Spoke ....... I remember riding all over the place no handed when I was a kid, on bumpy dirt roads no less. I remember seeing who could ride the farthest on the way to school... <sigh> About 4 years ago I tried to bunny hop a speed bump in a parking lot on my mountain bike. Somehow the chain came off as I was landing & there was NO resistance on the next pedal stroke and over the handle bars on to my face I went. I had a nice black eye and scrapes on my face but the worst thing was I messed up 2 of my fingers so bad I could not ride for about 2 weeks. Yep healing takes longer now ..... DOH!! Oh and of course everybody seen me fall. And it was outside of a plasma donation place (sister was donating) so the doc from in the plasma center came and bandaged me up... Ohh fun times.... NOT lol.....
I didn't ride yesterday either.. I had plans to ride.... but everything just seemed to go wrong (all small things). Forgot the memory card for the camera, took more time in town running errands, started raining by the time I was done with the errands.. And I dunno this may have just been in my head.... but I didn't feel good..... LOL

I went 22 miles yesterday. It was pretty hot, but I guess I have gotten used to it although we are supposed to be over 100 by the end of the week. Still loving the new bike and have been working on my cadence. Can someone tell me what kind of cadence I should be working toward? Right now I can maintain around 90 rpm. Before I was under the impression that I needed to keep heavier pressure on the pedels to gain in speed, but keeping a faster cadence has actually helped me pick up my overall avarage speed. I'm not talking by just a little bit either it has really started jumping.

A cadence of 90 is plenty good for getting in shape, the goal is to use the bike's gearing to get your heart rate up, and not fatigue your legs. Your legs will naturally get stronger as your heart gets in shape, and you'll lose weight faster. Track racers will sprint up to 150+ RPM, but that's extremely hard to maintain. I'd use your target heart rate and leg fatigue as an indicator of whether you need to increase or decrease your cadence.
Almost forgot, yes, I rode today! Did about 13.5 miles, down highway 20 through the swamp. Saw at least 3 dead raccoons, heard several alligators as I rode. Got helping drafts from a few 18-wheelers, and got to watch the sunrise throw sunbeams through the mossy cypress trees... was a very nice ride. One of these days, I'm going to spend the weekend going down Hwy. 20 with a big broom and sweep up all the debris on the shoulders. I didn't have time to get my camera set up, so I'll get more pics the rest of the week, as I took the rest of the week off of work.

Well I did get out for a ride today because I like to torture myself I think..... I say I tortured myself because I always end up riding when its REALLY HOT... I started my ride at about 2pm or so today... I did remember the memory stick for the camera so that was a plus. But there isn't anything more to take pictures of on my normal ride. So I decided to ride down the where SR19 crosses over the barge canal. So the pics are of the bridge. I have only ridden over this bridge a couple of times and that scared me enough to never do it again.. In the picture where it turns from pavement to cement is where the shoulder/bike lane ends on the bridge. And LOTS of log, dump & big semi trucks use this road, very scary up on the bridge when one of those go by.
Ended up riding 27.25 miles.... The heat really started getting to me the last 9 miles or so... I just got overheated. If it weren't for a nice tail wind I most likely would have called for a ride. Even with the tail wind I came close at one point. I did recover a bit though after the last hill.. But I was COOKED when I finally did make it home. Glad I rode though..
I miss my bike PC that had the cadence setting... I just stopped working.. DOH! If I remember correctly I used to try to keep it between 80 and 85. Where I found it made the biggest difference when riding was going up hills. I focused more on the cadence and less on the speed on the hills.. and that seemed to help me get up the hills better.

Aaaand I did it again! Got my lazy self outta the sack at 6:30a and hit the pavement. Had enough time to get in 10 miles @ 15MPH before hitting the shower and off to the cubicle farm. Early morning's the only sane time to ride any more;as july drifts toward August the mercury's drifiting up to the mid to upper 90s. I'm hoping I can get to where I'm getting in rides twice, maybe three times a week. Gotta get in shape for the big rides in the fall. :)
"fast ride" last night w/ county group, 5 riders inc. me. 24 miles, 20avg. out and back on pretty flat roads. no hills to speak of, just some inclines.

Hit the bike for 22.1 miles this morning, and man! Had headwinds most of the way, could barely get over 10MPH in some stretches. When I got back home, I felt like I had been riding forever, even though it wasn't that long. I used the granny ring for the first time in a year, I think... ugh. Spinning on.

Today’s ride as seen through the eyes of my bike:
After my bout with leg cramps on Sunday I took Monday off and planned to take Tuesday as well. However about 7:30 pm Tuesday evening I decided to try and work some of the stiffness out of the legs. I went out and did a short easy 6 miles, didn’t take the computer or wear a helmet, just wanted to spin.
Today I got out pretty early (7:30 am) and did an easy 28. Did my usual Panera Bread ride and had a bagel with veggie cream cheese and a large iced tea before heading home.
There are several nice neighborhoods that border the Seminole Wekiva Trail that cyclist can and do ride thru and pick up additional mileage with low traffic and wide smooth roads. This morning I rode thru Springs Landing Estates. I can pick up about 6 additional miles by doing this loop. I have seen deer in this area even in the late morning but I guess it was just too hot for them to be moving.
Yesterday I went to Orange Cycle in College Park and bought Hammer Endurolytes, an electrolyte replenishment capsule, I took 2 before I left this morning then one at Panera Bread and another on the way home. It may be a little premature to say that they work but I feel better after today’s ride than I normally do after a similar ride. If they do the same thing tomorrow I will be a convert and RICK @OCCR will be my new best friend for his post in another thread about leg cramps.
I hope you enjoyed my ride…

Slow Spoke ... Did you do a wheelie to get a picture of that chopper???? LOL Very cool pics though....
I didn't take the camera today.... Same ole boring ride with nothing more to see..... (that and I was in a hurry and forgot the camera). Just before I was going to leave for a ride a customer showed up with a PC that needed fixing. So I got started on the ride a bit later than I would have liked. Kind of rushed out the door. Met the nephew at the Walmart in town... just for something to do. 11.75 miles there and 11.75 back sooo a bit over 23 miles today. I really wish I had a north/south road near by to ride sometimes.... On the days I dont feel like dealing with the headwind. Headwind all the way into wally today.... (going east). Got back just before dark... On the plus side it was quite a bit cooler... Felt strong the whole ride today........ even into the wind

Did my "short" ride this morning, only 13.6 miles through the swamp. The bike started making some creaking noises, so I'm going to give a full once-over later on. Also, I think I finally dialed in my trekker bars, no hand numbness today. It's a more aero position too, so it's win/win. I even took a couple of pics, I"ll post them up later.

Took Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off. Working from home today and slipped in a shorter ride. Left later than I wanted to waiting on time sensitive work from someone else. Grr. It was already 82 when I left. The humidity was probably around 70%. Normally I'd say that's not so bad, but I'm battling my special lady time so it felt much worse than it sounds. I did a variation of the Trolley Trail loop I've done before. Came out to 9.15 miles no stops except for lights.
This week I started the paperwork for Commuter Rewards (http://www.commuterrewards.com/). Get paid to ride to work? Sounds like incentive to me! The morning ride should be no problem, but I do have concerns about the ride home at 4pm. At least I'll be able to stop as needed to cool down. Maybe the first time I'll plan a midway rest stop. Maybe somewhere air conditioned. :-)
No pictures today. I didn't bring my camera. The trolley trail is pretty so I'll get pics next time I take it.
Funny, there's another thread I read a while back about littering. Poster was asking if throwing an apple core on the ground was littering. Someone brought up banana peels hazards on the roads. Damned if I'm not seeing banana peels constantly now. Usually on the side of the road, but today smack in the middle.

Very boring ride today, outside of the heat and humidity the only two things worth mentioning were the 2 gals that I had a conversation with at Panera bread and the armadillo that was digging for his breakfast beside the road. I thought it was a little premature to ask the gals if I could photograph them but the armadillo didn't care. So here is my photo contribution for today, such as it is....

abracapocus ..... You made me laugh with your comment...
Had to go to G.ville today... Rode from Sams Club & down part of the G.ville Hawthorne trail to Hawthorne. Didn't really like the traffic and the fumes so much... I swear I think the trail was 10 degrees cooler than riding on the road. Ended up riding almost exactly 23 miles... Was a good ride once I got out of town.
Went to the bike shop to get some chain lube...... Left with chain lube & new bike shoes..... DOH!!
1st pic is of a trail that runs along side of Waldo Road in G.ville.
2nd pic is of a group of riders that all of a sudden were behind me, NO on your left or anything they were just THERE... With the traffic flying by I didn't really hear them, but heard something so got to the right anyway. NOT one of them said hello, or how are you ... not a peep..... Did hear them talking about Chris Horner and how well he rode the last few days. They really didn't fly by or anything, I was curb side for about 30 seconds with them going by..... JUST trying to stay straight... As you can see in the pic they are out into the traffic lane.... I'm sure they were out into the lane even more when they went around me....
3rd pic..... just another stretch of the road coming out of G.ville

Ha, well, riding city streets there's no end to the junk I see. Never boring, that's for sure. I'd gladly trade the condoms for a few of kjc964's armadillos. :-)

Glad to see it's not just me. More often than not my head nod or smile is ignored by other cyclists. Pedestrians I encounter are more friendly.
My last ride I also got to find out the wrong way to lean into a turn. At first I thought "oh, I can't lean over that far" but then when I thought about it I realized I must have had that side's pedal down. Something I never had to think about on the motorcycle. Of course, I've hit pegs before too, so...I guess I just like leaning.
Changed out the tires, tubes and brake pads on the Schwinn Breeze. Pedaled it around in front of my house. It's kind of terrible to ride. The shifting seems messed up so I need to figure that out. Need to fiddle with the brakes some more and see if I can't get the stopping to work better. And I feel like I don't have control in that more upright position. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

And I feel like I don't have control in that more upright position. Maybe I just need to get used to it.
Years ago when I first started riding as an adult I went through 3 and 1/2 Wally Mart bikes. I say 3 and a half because I used a 4th to keep 2 of the others going. Broken spokes, sheered teeth, bad brakes, bent axle's you name it I wore it out on the wally bikes. But through those bikes I learned I found something I loved to do.... Anyway.. the first time I test rode a real bike (my Fisher Tassajara) I thought I was going to go over the handle bars just riding, because your so far forward over the bars. Now I cant imagine it being any other way.. People that don't ride or have never ridden a quote unquote good bike ask all the time doesn't your back hurt riding like that? The truth is a lot of the time if my back is hurting.. riding will stretch it out and make it feel better.
Got my new bike shoes all set up... ready to test them out on the bike later. They are lighter and seem to have more support...

Got out for a ride on Friday.... The wind was NOT my friend on the 10 miles out.... was NOT my friend in a big way ... lol The headwind was brutal heading east. Several times I thought about just turning around and going back home.... But I didn't ... Went on past my resting rock a lil bit so that I would get a 20 mile ride in. Stopped at the resting rock for a bit on the way back though. The new shoes felt really good, but I had to adjust the left one a bit while at the resting rock. I took the camera today, but uggggg just nothing really to take any pictures of. I tried taking a couple of pics of some flags blowing in the wind but they didn't turn out very good.
Anyway..... Glad I went and got the 20 miles in.... felt good when done...

Today’s ride as seen through the eyes of my bike:
Got out early this morning and the temp was already 79* and the humidity was 96%. Loads of people out today runners, roller bladers, walkers, cyclist and lots of wildlife as well.
I made my stop at Panera Bread for a bagel w/cream cheese and an iced tea. Then I took International Parkway north to Wayfield Road and turned west for about a mile where I passed these two churches that were across the street from each other. Not hard to tell which one has the largest collection plate on Sunday. The two houses in the background are part of the larger church. Kind of a stark contrast don't you think?
On the trip back thru Heathrow I saw about 3 dozen Sand Hill Cranes, my favorite bird. Several Gopher Tortoises were out along the trail today enjoying the sun and having a little breakfast. I encountered a group of runners at about the 2 mile mark and they were so busy listening to there music that I really had to shout to get them to let me pass. Oh well the trail does belong to everyone.... I think I saw more groups of cyclist today than I have ever seen, they were just every where.
I hope you enjoyed my ride.:)

Did 22 miles this morning with my buddy, I'm trying to get him into the hobby, and we've been enjoying the quiet riding. He's riding a nice Nishiki mountain bike I found in the trash and rebuilt with slicks for about $45. Last week, I felt like garbage (I think I'm developing an egg allergy, I had 2 fried eggs for breakfast) and so he was able to keep up with me the whole way. LOL, I think I suckered him into thinking it was easy. :)
I finally got my handlebar setup tweaked just right, I rotated the trekking bars forward and moved my brake levers inward, and everything worked like a charm. The bike is still making a creaking noise I haven't been able to locate, I think I've narrowed it to the seatpost.
Today, we had good tailwinds thanks to Tropical Storm Bonnie, and made really good time. We stopped at 16 miles, rehydrated, and the last 6 miles my poor bud was sucking wind... I guess he forgot to eat a snack, and his body hadn't adjusted to going more than 90 minutes without food. So I spun down and we limped back home, and still beat our time from last week.
We ran across a couple of riders at the gas station from the local bike club (both of which I knew) so we chatted for a bit. I asked if they'd let my friend pick up one guy's Cannondale road bike, he just about freaked at how light it was.
Still enjoying life! My Wal-Mart Schwinn (Pacific Cycles) aluminum hardtail MTB is about to log over 1,000 miles since last summer. I decided to put my old Kendas back on it to see how many more miles I can get out of them before they start to cord.

yes, finally...20.2 miles on the Withlachochee Trail. Holder to Inverness. Rested awhile in front of the bike shop at Inverness and then back. We did get rained on the last mile or so but it felt pretty good. Just nice to finally get some miles in. Next weekend we are heading up to Mike Roess Gold Branch State Park to camp for the weekend. Not sure if I should take the mb or the road bike. Might just take both. Probably the last weekend of riding for me before my knee surgery.

Hey, I just rode up to Golds Head today & actually rode around in the park this time. I was on the road bike. I think the main road into the park had to be at least 3 miles long. There were also a couple of other roads I didn't go down once in the park. I'll post some pictures a bit later of my ride including some from in the park.

Haven't been able to post in a few days, but I have been riding. 30 miles Thursday, 15 miles Friday, and 21 miles today. I have been doing my best to maintain my cadence and have been able to achieve a solid 90rpm. It has been pretty rough with the heat moving in, it has been around 100 with the humidity around 90% for the past few days.
Still enjoying the new bike. I have now equiped it with new KEO Look pedals and got a pair of Bontrager RXL Gold Series Road Shoes (sorry Slow Spoke no pic yet). This is my first bike with pedals like this and I am really enjoying being able to pull the pedals as well as push them. It is really helping me maintain a good speed and I have actually picked up my avarage.

I think it was close to noon when I took off from the parking area on me bike. I rode on the Palatka Lake Butler trail in Keystone Heights and then up to Golds Head State Park, and rode around in the park this time. It had just got done raining when I started my ride (man the trail dries out FAST). Ended up riding 30.6 miles total. I usually ride on the trail that follows SR21 up to Golds Head but they had just got done mowing it and it was covered with grass clippings and who knows what else. So I rode on the shoulder of the road which is actually pretty nice, and wide. I really wanna go to the park one day and just spend the whole day there... Maybe check out some of the off road trails too. I had to put the camera away on the way back it started to rain.....
1st pic.... They are getting closer to putting some pavement down to extend the trail.
2nd pic ... Just a shot of the trail going towards Keystone Heights.
3rd pic... SR21 Going towards Golds Head State Park... Quite a few hills on this stretch of road at least for florida.
pics 4,5 & 7 ... Just shots of the main road in the park... Small rolling hills nice to ride on.
Pic 6 ..... One of the cabins you can rent in the park...

Saturday I got in my longest ride yet, 18.3 miles! Funny, I think I'm the only one posting right now that is riding in the city. I headed to Piedmont Park again, then had the plan to take Piedmont Rd. over to the Morningside neighborhood, cut through to Druid Hills/Virginia-Highland and start working my way home.
On the way to the park I get a "hey beautiful" shout out and the "way to travel" wheelchair guy was out giving encouragement as well. Who knew the old fourth ward was so friendly?
The park was super busy. I hadn't been on a Saturday morning yet. There might have been an organized run. Tons of joggers, dog walkers, baby pushers. A couple of cyclists. Had to work my way through the Green Market setting up. I sat on the bench at the Piedmont Rd. entrance and ate a Larabar and drank some water. So this is what I saw:

I'm getting much more comfortable around traffic. After I left the park, I rode a bit on Piedmont Road which is a pretty main street. After I wiggled through to N. Highland Ave. I made the mistake of crossing over it to find a less busy route through the neighborhood. Oh the hills, so many hills. It just kept getting worse and I didn't want to get totally wrecked and not be able to get home. So I worked my way back to N. Highland and took that instead. It's a tight busy street so I was worried about the cars getting cranky or worse but I didn't have any problems.
My last pic is waiting at a light at N. Highland and Ponce de Leon. I thought I had the Plaza Theater and the Majestic diner both in the pic but just got the Plaza. Oh well.

abracapocus ... Saturday I got in my longest ride yet, 18.3 miles! .....
Congrats on your longest ride yet..... that's awesome!!! The closest thing I come to riding in a city is when I go to Gainesville.. Not really a city but it does have a LOT of traffic in some areas. But being a college town it is in general more bike friendly with bike lanes and people more aware of people on bikes. I think the worst thing about riding in G.ville is all the stop & go, stop & go... So your 18 miles with a bunch of stop and go is a lot to me.... I did ride some back roads in Jacksonville Fl once 5 years ago .... LOL

Sunday 7/25
35.0 miles today.
569.3 miles this month
4049 miles this year
124 ride days LY vs. 129 ride days TY
3450 miles needed to hit 2010 goal (7500 miles)
I am @ 54% of my goal. I need to be @ 66.6% (5000 miles) by the end of August
452 miles ahead of last year at this date
No pictures today, I had the camera with me but never took it out of my jersey pocket. The heat and humidity was terrible today so I just concentrated on mileage. lots of people out today again. Didn't see as many club rides as I did yesterday.
If any of you read the 50+ forum you should have seen a post about leg cramps. One of the guys that posts on that board recommended Hammer Endurolytes capsules. I have been taking them for a week now and they have worked wonders. I can now leap tall buildings in a single bound.:lol: I take 2 before I leave then 1-2 about every hour during the ride.
Now if I could just find a capsule that would make me faster than a speeding bullet.:rolleyes:
zzOtherlandzz, nice pics. I need to figure out a way to come up and ride some of your trails.

LOL Evey time I see your pictures I think... wow his pics are way better than mine... lol But I'm having fun... taking pics helps keep me motivated, and in the past I have had probs with the motivation part. Reading other posts on here helps, seeing the pictures, reading about different places to ride.. Its all GREAT!! to me....
If you have never ridden the Ganesville Hawthorne trail it is really nice. 30 miles or so out and back, with more trails at the Gainesville end if you wanted to go exploring a bit more. Although the "extra" trails are in g.ville so there is a bit more stop & go for roads, lights and other stuff.
This fall when it cools down a bit and HOPEFULLY have a few more miles on my legs I want to go ride the Withlacoochee Trail. Years ago I had plans to go camp or stay someplace near the middle of the trail and ride north and back, and then the next day ride south and back. NO way I could do the whole thing in one day though.

I am getting back into the flow after a couple of weeks of sporadic riding due to vacation and some bike maintenance issues. Last Thursday I did 25 miles in the late afternoon (96 degrees), and this morning I did 30 (90 degrees). It's good to be back on the bike despite the heat. There were a ton of other riders out on my usual route this morning, Blunts Bridge Rd. in Ashland, VA (part of US Bike Rte. 76). It's becoming quite the popular cycling area. I guess a lot of people wanted to get their riding in before the real heat today.

Man, I'm loving seeing everybody here posting up and riding... keeps me motivated, too! I wish I had time to ride longer rides each day, but I'll do what I can... and with my new beginner riding partner, I'm not going to be knocking out 50 miles on a Saturday for a while, unless I do a second lap on my 22-mile loop. Hmm...
I'm training for the MS 150 tour here in October, for a good friend of mine who was just diagnosed with MS this year. She's in her late 30's and is really taking it hard, so I'm doing what I can to raise money and raise her spirits, too. Last year, I rode a heavy bike and made it 114 miles until the event was called by rain... this year, I want to make the whole 150 miles. I still haven't done a one-day century, but our local club does one every year in the spring.

[QUOTE=zzOtherlandzz;11170349]I think it was close to noon when I took off from the parking area on me bike.

Can you tell me more about the Palatka Lake Butler trail? I can't find anything on any of the state websites about it. Do you know where I can find a map? I think I'm gonna take both bikes this coming weekend when we go up to camp. I didn't realize until you showed these pictures that there were so many paved trails near there. Thanks so much!! I just love all the pictures that everyone is posting.

There really isn't much information about the trail yet, there is about 6 miles paved so far, with another 4 miles that should be finished sometime in Sept. You can't miss the trail on the north side of state road 100 in Keystone Heights. Here is a website with a little bit of information... http://www.dep.state.fl.us/gwt/state/palatka/default.htm The trail head at twin lakes park has bathrooms, drinking fountain, playground. I have ridden the non-paved part from Palatka to Grandin a couple of times on the mountain bike, its pretty fun. I'll probably do some more of that again when the temp cools down a bit and the yellow flies go die or something LOL. The other trail that leads up to Golds Head follows along side of SR21 up to the park from Keystone. Lots of traffic in the first 1/2 mile of that trail, have to watch out for cars crossing the trail. To be honest I think I liked riding on the shoulder (bike lane) of SR21 better than I liked riding on the trail, because I didn't have to worry so much about cars shooting out of driveways and roads and crossing the trail without looking. And it really was fun just riding back into the park the other day. I rode at least 6 miles on the nice paved roads in the park.
If you do take the mountain bike let me know what kind of trails you find in the park !!!
<sigh> no ride for me Sunday..... Something I ate did NOT agree with me, so I had to stay close to home ......

Monday 7/26/2010 no ride today.
Bike cleaning this morning and then driving to St Pete for two days of riding with my daughter. We plan to ride the Pinellas Trail and downtown St Pete and the Ft Desoto area weather permitting. I will not have internet access until Thursday so I should have plenty of pics to put up then.
I hope everyone has a good week to get out and ride.

Sunday I dialed it back a bit, 11.6 miles. My legs were a little angry with me over all the hill climbing Saturday. Of course there is no total rest from hills for me. I live in a bit of a hollow so every ride involves climbing out. At least it's gradual.
As part of my plan to take it easy, I rode up to one of our MUPs, the PATH Freedom Park trail (http://www.pathfoundation.org/index.cfm?event=showADKTrail). On the way there, I had a first. Riding along the road, I see another cyclist coming towards me. As he gets closer I think "hey, I know that guy!" It was a friend of friends. Odd that I should run into anyone I know riding before 8am. :-)
I hopped on the trail by Candler Park golf course. And it's lovely at that end. I'd never been that far down it. Little bridges over creeks, lovely landscaping and.....rolling hills. Yay, more climbing! I stopped for a second just as I got on the trail and snapped this pic:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4829736065_dcc7af52fe.jpg
See that dog on the trail? Well, just as I start pedaling down the trail, another dog, off leash, comes up from the right, was at the creek I guess, and sits right on the trail in front of me. At least he got up before I got there. It was early enough that there weren't too many people out. Mostly joggers and dog walkers. A couple of cyclists. While I enjoyed the nice smooth path and scenery, I wouldn't want to ride it much busier than it was.
I ended up following the trail to just short of the Carter Center and looped back towards home. No rest stops this ride, just the regular lights and the pause to take that one picture. zzOtherlandzz, it depends on the route how many stops I have to make. If I have a clear view, I don't always stop for stop signs or lights. There's nothing worse than having to climb a hill or come to a full stop after you're all comfortable in your saddle. It gets my bits all out of whack. Then I'm wiggling on the saddle trying to get right again. :-)
Not sure when my next ride will be. Maybe Wednesday.

Abracapocus ... That is a really cool picture. I'm having fun taking pics but yours and slo spokes look better lol ...
I did get out for a ride today actually started at about 9:30am, early for me. For about 80% of the ride I just felt kinda yucky. Feet hurt a bit (could be the new shoes, but they were fine Sat), hands hurt a bit, legs felt like led. Every little thing seemed to be bothering me on the bike today. Maybe because I was under the weather yesterday I dunno... I feel good now though after being home awhile and cooling down. No pictures, same ole ride same ole nothing to see. Well that's not totally true. Workers were edging and cutting the grass between the sidewalk and the road and blowing ALL of the debris into the bike lane. I almost had to come to a complete stop before they saw me, but they were cool and let me pass. But there was SO much stuff in the bike lane I had to ride the sidewalk for about 2 miles. They used a street sweeper to clean it all up later... so the next ride should be nice with a clean bike lane. :)
Ended up riding a bit over 23 miles... Glad I went...

zzOtherlandzz, street sweepers? I almost forgot what those were. I've only seen one in Atlanta the twelve years I've lived here. On a ride last week, a construction worker was sweeping debris out of the bike lane as I passed. I thanked him.
Finally got out for a ride this morning. Just a 10.6 mile loop. I left around 9:30am. It was around 80 degrees when I left and humid as always. Even though I didn't have any cloud cover this morning, the sun didn't bother me as much as it has in the past. Boy the first two miles always seem to be the hardest. I wish I had flats to warm up on, but I just don't.
Didn't take any rest breaks, just pic breaks this ride. This is the other side of Candler Park Golf Course from the trail I took last week.

And on the other side of the road, this is what the neighborhood looks like:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4091/4838448348_9887f85d5a.jpg
I passed through this little shopping area known as Little Five Points.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4147/4838448542_533eccdb32.jpg
Then I passed by this, built by one of Coca Cola's founders, Asa Candler.

And, back through Krog Tunnel which has a new coat of paint.

A lot more cars out today. A few crowded me a bit, one sort of pulled out in front of me but no harm done. I got accepted into the commuter rewards program starting 8/1. Maybe next week I'll do my first commute! Just wish it wasn't so unbearably hot in the afternoons...

Yep I got a ride in today, VERY HOT!! Sister needed a ride to Crescent Beach today to clean a condo. So I loaded up the Mtn bike and headed that way. Decided I would ride the Moses Creek trails. Trail head is on SR206 just east of US1. I actually took my Road bike too thinking I would ride some on the trails and then ride some on the road. Didn't end up riding the road bike though. I did ride about 6 miles (including about 1/2 mile of walking, see pics below) on the trails and a bit over 11 miles on the road. For a total of 17.35. The camera quit working when I got out to the road.... The thing EATS batteries... I did get some rechargeable batteries but forgot to charge them.... DOH!! It sure shakes around a lot when riding on the trails. Really didn't know how the pictures were going to turn out. One thing for sure.... its harder to take pictures bumping around on the trails than it is on the road....
1st pic.... Is the sign at the trail head the more western trail head.
2n pic .... Just a shot of the trail about 1/2 mile from the trail head.
3rd pic .. Patch of sugar sand... walking time ... so so so hot walking through that stuff.
4th pic .. Is a shot of the power lines, NO WAY i can ride down that. There are more nice trails down that way though if you want to walk the mile or so in the sugar sand to get to them. There is also an observation tower set up next the the power lines that somebody uses to observe some kind of birds nest on top of one of the power polls. Its not really a tower it is really just a telephone pole with a seat on the top of it. Might be and eagle nest? I'm not sure.
5th pic... Moses Creek..... When we have had some rain it can be at least 2x as big as it is in the picture.
6th thu 10 pics.... Are pictures of the inland waterway. That is a floating dock in the picture so no matter what the water level is the doc is still usable. Nice place to canoe and kayak i'm told.
pic 11 ... Is a shot of the primitive campsite. There is a hand water pump and even a Porta-Pottie set up there. Picnic tables and a fire pit.
18 mile ride with my friend Mike Jones this evening... He did get in 8 more than I, as it's about 4 miles from his house to mine. Had some fun sprints and great conversation. First time on a bike since last Tuesday.

Today’s ride as seen through the eyes of my bike… 7/27/2010 36 miles
Julie (my wife) and I drove to St Petersburg on Monday evening to spend a couple of days with my daughter and get some ride time with her. Tina (my daughter) has Tuesdays and Wednesdays off from her job so it makes for some good riding time for us.
Upon arrival in St Pete, Tina told me that she was having a problem with the back wheel of her bike dragging against the break pad, so I started to do a little investigating and discovered that the rim was starting to split at the holes where the spokes came through the rim. Two of them were bad enough that the spoke was about to pull out of the rim causing the wheel to wobble. We had to put our Tuesday morning ride on hold and make a trip to the LBS for a new rim. We purchased a generic wheel and put a cheep cassette that I had on the wheel to get her going short term. I plan to take her damaged wheel and cut the Campy hub and cassette out of the wheel and have a new one built for her when I get back to Orlando. Not wanting to ride in the hottest part of the day we decided to do an evening ride into downtown St. Petersburg.
With a new rim and everything in repair we rolled out about 6:00 pm and headed south towards the Sky Way Bridge and Pinellas Point. After a swing thru Maximo Park at the southern most point of the Pinellas County mainland, we started riding north towards downtown St Petersburg. Tina has been riding a well marked ride called Share The Road route over the last week or two. This 60 mile route is marked by the St Pete Bike Club and takes riders thru some very nice areas of Pinellas County and St. Petersburg, we road past The St Pete Country Club and the Boyd Hill nature Area then thru downtown then north towards the Gandy Bridge. Most of this route runs alongside Tampa Bay to the right and some very expensive homes/real estate on the left. The route takes you past Albert Whitted Air Field and Progress Energy Park (formerly known as Al Lang Stadium) in downtown St Pete. This baseball stadium was used as a spring training facility for some Major League Baseball team’s years ago before they started moving much of spring training to Arizona. A short distance north of the airport we road by the construction site of the new Salvador Dali Art Museum. Salvador was one of the world’s most famous and controversial artists. His extraordinary works popularized the art movement known as Surrealism. Next was St Pete Pier that has been a land mark tourist attraction in Pinellas County and St Pete for decades. Time has taken its toll on this location and there is a lot of discussion about tearing it down and just utilizing the park area around it. A little further north we passed the Morean Arts Center where the Chihuly Collection is on display through the end of next month. Dale Chihuly was blind in one eye and created all of his art by blowing glass. A short distance up the road is the world famous Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club. Just north of the Vinoy the route starts to turn residential again with beautiful homes on our left and boat docks and expensive boats on our right.
At about the 20 mile mark we decided that we had just about enough daylight to get us back home before dark. Both of us have plenty of lights some of which we have on even during the daylight hours, however I am not a big fan of riding on the roads with traffic after dark.
Our trip back was about the same route that we took going north with a side trip out to the end of the pier for a cold drink. While enjoying our Pepsi and the sunset we spotted two schools of dolphin swimming about fifty yards out in the bay. I tried to get a picture of them but all you can see is the dorsal fin as it breaks the surface of the water. One of the locals was fishing at the end of the pier and he had two pelicans sitting beside him waiting for him to catch something that he would share with them.
An amazing bird, the pelican it is said that his beak can hold more than his belly can. (A little attempt at humor here)
The remaining ride home was very relaxing with cool breezes and minimal traffic. We arrived home about 9:00 pm and my wife served us large bowls of strawberry ice cream to top off a great day.
I hope you enjoyed our ride…

Slo Spoke .... When I first got my Trek a few years ago I was riding home from the coast and had a flat. My ride was coming along soon to get me anyway but before she got there I noticed EVERY spoke hole on both rims were starting to crack. I was never more glad I got a flat than I was that day.... If not for the flat I may not have noticed how bad the wheels were. Anyway Trek upgraded my wheel set for free. At the time the upgraded set cost $499. Didn't have my bike for a week or so, but got some nice wheels in the process. Turns out it was a manufacturing defect and they were replacing a lot of wheels. Without looking I don't remember the model of the wheels. They were made by Bontrager though. .............. Very cool pictures btw!!!
No ride today.... I was just sitting in the living room about 20 mins ago watching it rain.... I didn't see any lightning for about 10 minutes so i said to self..... self lets go for a ride in rain... So rushed outside with my mountain bike and started getting my bike shoes out of the van.... Before I had my shoes on.... another part of the front must have rolled in because there was a LOT of lightning now... Stayed outside until about 5 minutes ago.... and gave up and came back in..... <sigh> no ride in the rain... I don't mind the rain.... but I'll pass on the lightning... Now the scared'y dog is sitting behind me while I type thing because she is afraid of the thunder.... It's not really comfortable sitting like this.... LOL
