Got my entry form from Teen Challenge today for S2S. This is a real charity ride sponsored by Teen Challenge , a teen recovery center in Ventura. This is their only fund raiser of the year so support is greatly appreciated. The ride is from just out side of Ventura to Mt. Pinos. 87 miles 12k climbing. Every cent of the money collected goes to one of the participating charities, your choice. This is a very difficult ride but the most rewarding , for me. All the rest stops are manned by people from the charities, usually throngs of chearing teenagers in recovery. Believe me they are what make this ride worthwhile. That and it's just a great ride through some seldom traveled roads and pretty country. It's a one way route so ,unless you are Thompson,;) you need to arrange for a ride home. There is no web site that I am aware of but the phone contacts are Norm Hudson 805-6857383, or Teen Challenge at 805-648-3295. Or I could fax you a reg. form. The reg. fee is $30 sent in with the reg. and a minimum donation of $30 as well. For me, this is the hardest, but most gratifying ride I do each year.

Received my packet today, as well. I hope to be a little better prepared this time and not suffer as much. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there and perhaps meeting Merider1 during this year's ride.

You already signed up? I hope I'm ready for this ride this year. I'm hitting Baldy again soon and am going to keep increasing my climbing, but S2S is a beast. I look forward to meeting you, Afausto. :)

It's one week before Breathless Agony. Anybody doing this and the KOM series?

I doubt it as that would be insane. I don't think anyone did both last year.

I am. Out of the 3 KOM rides, Heartbreak is the least hard. The problem with Heartbreak is usually the heat. Besides, all this climbing is good training for the Death Ride in July.

I'm pretty sure V Bob did this ride and then Heartbreak the following week last year. Not sure if he did other KOM rides, but since he was climbing 10k+ every week, he might as well have :)

I thought he did part of Heartbreak, not the whole thing - not to say that he couldn't have given Bob's climbing abilities - but I'm pretty sure he told me that he didn't do the full ride.

Bob, should I be corrected?

If I don't do Conejo with the wife, I may be doing repeats on Pinos the week after Breathless. We usually do 3-4 repeats from the base of the Pinos climb. Anybody in for repeats on Pinos? The ride is up in the pines, 8 mile climb, 2300 ft of gain, then a 8 mile descent, very little traffic. The start of the climb is at 6,000 ft and is great training for the DR. The elevation range is very similar. Its only climbing.

We did GMR the next day after s2s and I don't remember suffering too bad. I've been averaging about 14k a week for the last couple of years. Did that much last weekend. Wish I had some time during the week. So for those who are wondering if they can sandwich s2s in between other hard rides ,I feel that I can and you are probably younger that me.:)

You did the four counties or Heartbreak? 4 counties starts in Lake of the Woods instead of Lebec and does the same route from there.

Oh, I know Bob that you did a portion of the same route, but not Heartbreak in its entirety. Not that you couldn't have...:)

Well, last year I sweet talked Ronjon into doing it (and bought him dinner, which he didn't want to accept). You basically have to get a friend who's willing to drive up there and get you. I typically offer something in return, like a dinner and gas money.

Um, excuse me...you can't call shotgun if you aren't committed to riding this ride.

I spoke to the organizer of s2s today and there is a possibility that the route may be altered due to road closure. They won't know for two weeks but if they do change it it will be much shorter. I'll keep you posted but it's still for a great cause and they will refund your entry if you chose not to do the shortened route.

Bob,

I don't understand this, I checked 33 and it is open w/no problems, Lockwood Valley Rd is open w/no problems and even the road to the top of Pinos is currently open. Unless there is an upcoming construction project to one of those roads, it doesn't make any sense. They didn't even close down 33 for the extended time they spent resurfacing it the last couple of years.

I saw something in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago saying that hwy 33 was going to be closed for months due to an area needing repair around Matlliha Creek. It went on to say that one lane would remain open so go figure. Laura called out there asking about the t-shirts and they told her. I then called the contact guy and he said to call back in 2 weeks, so I will.:(

Good news. I spoke to the organizer for s2s today and the ride will go on as planned. They have installed a stop light where the road closes to 1 lane, 4 miles outside of Ohai, and Teen Challenge will post someone there to make sure all get through safely. Now all we have to do is to do the ride.

It's getting close to s2s. Now this is a real hard ride. It looks like a good group riding for a great cause and as always we are looking for someone willing to pick some up at Mt. Pinos after the ride. That is a great area to train in, maybe someone would like to do a training ride that day and pick a couple of us up. Eh, Il Bruto:)
