Bicycle Mechanics - nut stuck on axle

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just got a second-hand rear track wheel and one of the nuts is stuck on the axle. I can't figure out how to leverage it against the axle--there's nothing else to put a wrench on. I don't want to clamp down on the axle for fear of mushing the threads. Help!!
Thanks.

i think you need a cone wrench

Can you double nut the axle on the other side, and hold that with a wrench while you turn off the stuck side? Then to get the side the is double nutted off, use a wrench on both of the nuts.

LOL, I had a similar thought. Too much Beavis and Butt-head in my past.
I get it... heh heh, axle.
anyway, I got the stuck nut off, but now I see why it was stuck--there's a section of stripped threads on the axle. I guess I'll have to replace the axle? No use ruining another nut by threading it on there... Unless someone has another good idea?

You can try and run a Die on the axle to repair messed up threads, but if a section of threads is missing, you should replace the axle.
Just in case anybody cares... I ended up replacing the axle. Getting the cone adjustment right was not as hard as I imagined. So that's one more area of the bike no longer shrouded in mystery.
Thanks for the help.
