"Hats off !"
I saw this on another forum. Kids doing a great rendition of the National Anthem at a basketball game:

I still think the definitive version is Whitney at the Superbowl:

If that doesn't make you want to pick up a gun and go kill some terrorists, I don't know what will. http://media.scout.com/media/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif http://media.scout.com/media/forums/emoticons/166/patriot.gif

And let's not forget the unequalled stylings of Roseanne Barr/Arnold/Your-Name-Here at the SD Padres' game. Or Robert Goulet's way with the lyrics . . . .

Theyre scooping all over the place. Bad technique :(

It makes me want to kill their voice teacher.

Definitive? Please. She lip synched it.
Way to fake your patriotism like every halfbaked Hummer with an American Flag on it, Whitney.
The Star Spangled Banner is a mess anyway. Congress should formally change the national anthem to any Ray Charles or Willie Nelson version of "America the Beautiful" and we'd all be better off.

I like your national anthem alot, but sorry I hated that version.
Maybe because I can't stand vocal acrobatics (I'm not sure what it's called, but that constant key change crap, and wwWWwwwooOOOooowwWWwwooOOoo ahhhaaahhhaahhh stuff)
Oh also, what was she wearing? I think that get-up was an insult to the honor of being given such a important role.

I have so many issues with that song and the way it's performed that it would offend any right-winger out there and most left of center, too.
Also, I wonder how many people know the other 3 verses...I sure don't.
I'd love to learn them and sing the entire thing at a baseball game or some such event. I wonder how the people would react.
EDIT: It's almost as irritating and overdone as "Amazing Grace." Almost.

when I see whitney I definitely don't think of standing up for the country. Piles of white powder come to mind haha...
Voice acrobatics is a good way to describe that :)

Aren't anthems supposed to be overdone? Its not like a pop single.

In music school, I was told that the melody of the US national anthem was a bad choice since
it has such a wide range. Its not easy enough for the masses to sing. A national anthem
should be a song for the people, not elite singers or singers who are told by others that they have talent.
Oh Canada is a good example of a people's anthem. It is less than an octave in total range.
At Candlestick on Opening Day 1993, the Grateful Dead did the Star Spangled Banner. The Chron joked that it would be the first time that the National Anthem would feature a 15-minute drum solo. But they came in and did it straight. It was beautiful:

Pretty nice.
Speaking of sporting events: At the Dallas Stars Hockey home games, the crowd will all yell "Stars!"
when the anthem singer gets to those parts of the lyrics.
example:

At Cal football games, there are a couple of parts like that:
Oh, say can U.C.!
*
And the rockets' BLUEglare....
*
And the home of the BEARS!
I didn't know if any other sports fans did that. Cool.

That's a given at Bradley University basketball games. Hearing 10,000 people scream "the home... of the.... BRAVES!!!!" is so sweet.

I think at sporting events it's perfectly acceptable for the National Anthem to be sung in a bombastic, over-the-top, flag-waving manner.
Speaking of sporting events: At the Dallas Stars Hockey home games, the crowd will all yell "Stars!" when the anthem singer gets to those parts of the lyrics.
At Cal football games (AKA University of California, Berkeley) many fans modify the song thusly:
Instead of "Oh say can you see," we say "Oh say can U C!" (emphasis on U C).
Instead of "And the rocket's red glare," we say "And the rocket's blue glare" because Cal fans hate the color red (associated with Stanford). BTW, we also say that freshmen don't "red shirt," they "blue shirt."
I hear that Atlanta baseball fans change "and the home of the brave?" to "and the home of the Braves!"
Edit: Damn, I can't believe I got beat to the Cal thing! I write too slow. Go Bears!

Good point. However, I feel there's a line between using an anthem to show pride and open an event, and adding your own "little twists" on it to feed your megalomanical voice. It's similar to how I feel about the same 7 Christmas songs being done 500,000,000,000,000,001 times by different artists, all feeling they have something special to add to them, only more nationally offensive.

What a dreadful tune- regardless of the singer(s)! America the Beautiful would have been a much, much better choice.

Well, it was a drinking song originally.
I agree, other countries have much better anthems, musically speaking. My favorite American one is "My Country Tis of Thee" which of course is really "God Save the Queen".

I must be one of the few that actually like the song (and at one point as a kid, I knew the whole song, due to a random bout of focus), but Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey's versions are pretty obnoxious, I think. Then again, I've never really understood singing the national anthem at every sports game, anyway. Seems to cheapen the song quite a lot.
