Hi there,

I am planning to build a new mtb and i have two frames to pick from, i am wondering if someone can shed a little light on which is the best to choose. I am planning to use if for XC and set it up with a suspension fork (both are rigid at the moment).

first up is a 1997 specialized hardrock. cromoly frame in great condition. I've noticed the headset is 1" though and am wondering if that might cause an issue.

second is a 1988 cannondale sm500. aluminum frame in great condition. This one seems to be the burlier of the two, but I'm not sure if there will be issues since its pushing 20years old.

I plan to go mostly XT and some XTR for the components. Good quality rims and fork etc... so I want to make sure the frame is going to be worth it.

Am I crazy? Should I just invest in a new hardtail instead?

A a retro bike is cool but if it was my main ride I'd get a new one.
