My current goal is to train for and ride a couple of time trials this spring. I feel like I put in a good base of mileage this past season, and will begin training more specifically for a time trial over the winter. (Just for my fun, I will not be competative).

What I really need is to train for a specific event. Can anyone advise me on a good time trial in the central New Jersey or eastern PA area that would be appropriate for a newbie? I want to ride in the 10 mile or 20 kilometer distance to start. I am shooting for around mid to end of March for the first go.

Another question is: I can't afford a time trial bike and will be riding my road bike. Will my road bike have to conform to the UCI regulations? It's probably obvious that it depends on who is putting on the race, etc, I guess. It might seem like an odd question, but as it is right now, my bike does not conform to the regulation where the nose of the saddle cannot be closer than 5 cm behind the bottom bracket spindle. Go figure, it's just a regular old road bike. I have it dialed in exactly right for me and it doesn't fulfill the UCI regulations. I think part of the problem is the saddle is too long, it's about 28.5 cm long. If I get the shortest saddle out there, that might fix the problem. I don't want to move the saddle aft, since it took me so long to get it just right!

Thanks!

Just so this post doesn't dangle there by itself forever more, I'll write in here the answers that I got from other sources. Since nobody knew the answers, maybe it'll help somebody else too.

The New Jersey Bicycle Association (and their web site) is the place to look for time trials, and other races in New Jersey. If you join a club or a team, make sure it is associated with NJBA. There are several time trials in their series that are spread evenly across the season.

My road bike will have to conform to the UCI rules. I'll have to either get a shorter saddle and/or move the saddle aft. I do not see how a time trial bike with a steep seat tube angle could ever fulfill that requirement, when my regular old road bike with a 73.5 degree seat tube angle cannot without a setback seatpost.

Hey, I believe the Sandy Hook area has a nice time trial place, but I'm not sure since I've never been out there.

Are you a university student? I may have seen you come into Kopps (I work there)

Also, www.bikereg.com has a bunch of race events in our area so that should help you get started.

Thanks Byron! That looks like a good web site to look up races. It'll probably fill up with events closer to spring time.

I'm not a student. I work at a big pharmaceutical company in the area. I go into Princeton alot, so I'll be sure to stop in to Kopps.

You guys should come down to Florida during the winter. I'm sure we'll have some more TT events. I just did a 40K, and I had a blast. There are a ton of great shops, and the weather is perfect.
