life lesson # 100,003. i've been itching to hit the trails for the last 3 weeks but due to work issues i haven't been able to go. today i finally get the chance, i skip lunch and go pick up my gear. on my way to the trailhead my stomach is growling and my head is pounding (i need food), i realize that i haven't eaten since 7pm last night. i stop by roberto's taco shop (taco shops are on every corner in SOCAL) i buy a carne asada burrito and devour it in 5 minutes. 10 minutes later i pull up to the trailhead i gear up and i'm on my way fat and happy. while riding i can feel my stomach churning but i figure it'll go away. 6 miles into the ride i can really feel the pain, i figure i'm half way through the loop and i've got 5 steep climbs to go including a switchback section that always kicks my butt. 1 hill, 2 hill 3 hill, 4 hill one more then i'm home free. #5 is a section of switchbacks around 7-8 turns really loose, fairly steep, very difficult near the end of a ride. i stop at the base take a few deep breaths, fart a few times, and take off i'm grinding my way up, lose traction on a really sketchy section but i'm able to pull through then the next section a 1 foot rock ledge that you have to pop over covered with loose sand and gravel. i round the corner spin alittle faster to get my momentum up get my front tire up and try to grind my rear over the ledge. i'm spinning my bodys tense, i'm breathing like a beast then it happens, i projectile vomit all over my bike my jersy. burrito fragments all over the place ( very nasty ). i was however able to get over the lip but then had to stop and do some damage control. i ended up removing my soiled jersy and cleaning my bike with it. i get to my car shirtless, dirty and smelling of vomit. what a great ride.

Did a similar thing except it was a ham and cheese omelet for breakfast and a Big Gulp Mountain Dew on the way to the trails. However, I managed to avoid getting it all over myself.

Burritos....omelets.....let me add maple bars to the list....
I rarely eat anything heavy before riding, otherwise I end up squatting in the woods or barfing trailside. Something light is one thing.. but BURRITOS?! Bad idea dude!
C'mon Jim just think if he'd kept that thing down he would have some bad a$$ rocket propulsion!

:D
My stomach tends to reject anything Mexican, greasy, spicy, or overly fatty. It comes out in a liquid fury at the worst times, so I avoid it before riding!
That only makes your riding partners better! Who'd want to be behind someone with Montezuma's Revenge?
I wondered why nobody wants to ride with me...
Hmm...

Thats bad new dude. Before any strenous activity i never eat a real meal unless i have about 2 1/2 to 3 hours of time before. Still though, that sounds nasty. From the title i was guessing that you would've **** yourself silly in a bush beside the trail

Does that mean you don't eat at Burrito Bro's? I used to eat there at least twice a week. Hmmm.....I'll take a Primo Burrito meat and bean combo with onions and hot peppers, double wrapped......Yeah! Great, I've just made myself hungry!

Several years ago, I remember using a burrito as an excuse for my poor performance in going up one of the most challenging rides in San Diego county, called Cole Grade Road.. I did have a beef burrito with cheese,it was huge and I ate it all. I had been warned had steep the double backs were.. Thought I needed the energy and thought I have a cast iron stomach.
I did not soil my jersey like rockstar. But I felt awful. I had a heart rate monitor on.. Recall, it got to mid 180's. Felt terrible. Dizzy. I have done double backs almost as challenging. Can recall that dizzy nauseous feeling. Have not been back to Cole Grade road since recalling that bloated feeling, having to walk up a steep grade for about a mile. I blame it on the burrito.
When having lunch on a major ride, it is food such as oatmeal.Toast. Juice and Tums.

hmm...you guys think that is bad...I had homecoming this past weekend, and ate nothing but junk and fatty crap...today's cross country (running) workout ranked up ther with the worst I'd ever had...I crapped 4 times in like 2 hours...it went like this...
-crap-
2 mile warmup
-crap-
1xmile
2x400m
-crap-
hill intervals, 3x300m, 2x100m
2 mile cooldown
-crap-
stretch + down immodium...
oh yea...it really sucked as much as it sounded. I could only do a 5:45 mile for the mile interval, and got beat by this sophomore b*tch that I always wanna kick cause he always acts like a dumbass...(eating pizza before a race, throws it up during, and wonders why he runs so bad) anyway, thats another rant...

I have lost some good riding buddies from eating Taco bell before a ride.
If only I had stayed at the back of the pace line no one would have even noticed.
