I raced--2nd race of the year.
Two laps, OTB.
Three laps of ITT.
Finish and not DFL.
NomadVW was there. I'll let him tell his story himself--if he wishes. He said after the race that he was heading to the Adirondacks and would be off-line for awhile.

I was there too. That cat. 4 race was a huge pack... like 90 something? I'm glad I did the Junior 17-18 for my first race since I have only had a week of training in because swimming just ended. Man three laps in that wind would have been not fun at all. I ended up getting first in the Junior race and my team mate got third in his age group.

Nice, that was my teammate you edged at the line, today was his first race ever. Nice job!

Yeah there was a lot of talk about NomadVW today, hopefully he shares his story, it's pretty priceless.
Raced the enormous cat4 race, long story short, I kept dropping my chain every time I shifted to the big ring, I made the split then eventually got spit out the back, I would loose so many positions, I had to shift so slowly so I didn't drop the gd chain. I rode the last 2 laps with Labrat_62, nice meeting and riding with him. His teammate won again this week, that's 2 in a row.

Why wait? I'll PayPal you $0.25 to tell the story right now and he can clarify things when he's back online.

Adirondacks? Maybe wisdom seeking from PCAD? O'Donnel? Britney? Lindsay?

Yup, did the Cat 4 race.
Kirkwood? Thinking about it, but probably the 50+.... for the experience. The smaller field will make it easier to navigate--if I can hang with the pack, low probability that the 50+ field will fill up any time soon.

Asked him whether he would see pcad. I thought he said something abut emailing him while he was up there? (from wherever he and his family are staying, perhaps?)
Maybe Nomad plans to hook up with pcad for a post-CP ride. Dunno. Lots of speculation here.

He did an awsome race for his first race. He seemed to be pretty inteligent about racing and everything unlike a few of the kids in that race and he had a good sprint. I didn't know you guys had junior racers did you start that this year?

Yup that's all my mentoring paying off, ha ha. He is our first junior, he trains with us and is really improving all the time. Seems to really be into racing. I drove him yesterday, he said some complimentary things about you as well. The two of you should work together this year, and dominate the 17-18 yr olds. I keep hearing rumors about another junior racing for us but have yet to see him.

Gee thanks, just as I got yesterday out of my head you had to post the results, confirmed, I sucked yesterday. Let me know if you're doing Kirkwood and we'll meet up before or after the race. I have a teammate in the 50+, his name is Paul, decent racer, just hang on his wheel, he'll tow you to the line.
I'm surprised the star of yesterday's cat4 race hasn't posted his story yet. Perhaps he's still getting wise words of wisdom from pcad.
I think it's best heard from the man, himself.
WTF, dude! All this buildup for a 30th place finish? Unless Tom had a two-minute lead on the field, crashed while raising his arms doing a victory salute, and then had to crawl across the line with his broken bike on his back, I'm going to claim faulty advertising.

Ok...it's no big deal. He made a simple mistake--costly, but simple during the heat of battle.
Btw, I'm doing this so that he doesn't need to feel compelled to respond to this thread if he so wishes. He seems to be a really good guy and family man.
The jist of his story to me was that he made a mistake regarding what lap he was on. He and another guy were out in front on lap 4 of 5. As they approached the line, I believe he said something to his breakaway partner about taking the sprint. I think Tom mentioned getting a weird look from the guy. As they approached the closing stretch Nomad busted out his best sprint for the day and won lap 4, including a celebratory arm wave across the line. Then he was passed by his breakaway partner, who shouted at Tom something about one more lap. [Whoops!] By the time he got himself together, he was passed by much of the pack. Having given his all during the sprint, he was blown and that's why he finished where he did.
That's is all.

Wow, so my guess wasn't all that far off.

That dude did win it, just not solo.
NoRacer, your description seems less dramatic than what I was told by a spectator, did not meet Nomad so I did not get a first hand account. The person told me he came through with both hands raised in celebration. Your account is less embarrassing, though probably more accurate, sucks for Nomad, perhaps had he not burned his matches on lap 4 he could have won.

no the solo break on the 1st lap was me, well off the line, then my teammate bridged, we were joined by 2 more, then teammate attacked and dropped all of us. And ya, Nomad had a great Lap 4 win, only to be told by my teammate that he had 1 more to go. The best part of the story, is while lining up, he was telling me about racing in Japan, and how he had to tell someone else that there was 1 more to go. Ha

Everyone makes mistakes, and i'm sure this will all seem a lot funnier to Nomad after he's won his 50th race.
Besides, he can play off this as a tactic in future races.

The real question is... Would these two have stayed away from the field had NomadVW not gone for the win one lap too early? If not, then it's really a moot point.
Besides, we've all done dumb stuff during a race. The only reason I'm laughing my ass off is that I can totally see myself doing that--and I know that NomadVW is going to rip the legs off of people as the season progresses so it's not like this was his only chance at glory.

Who knows if they would have stayed away, maybe they would. The tri-state velo guy seems to have a big engine, tearing up the field so far this year.
I am by no means poking fun at or criticizing Nomad, I just thought it a bit funny and embarassing when I heard about it, then labrat told me it was Nomad, I thought he'd share his moment with the rest of the bfers. Like you said, we all do dumb stuff, it could have been any one of us.

Yes, nomad will definitely make us pay for laughing by destroying fields for the rest of the year, what makes it funny to me, is his story right before the race of the situation being reversed. Either way, the two of them were ripping the field apart.

So, having returned from the Great White North, my daughter and I found something we've eaten coming out both ends, of sorts.
Here's the REAL story, and my race report.
Lined up with Labrat and chatted for a bit. We talked strategy and the suckage of a 90 person field. He told me his plan was to get off the front fast and go. I told him I just wanted the field thinned down since the pack was so enormous it was bound to be a crash fest. We chatted previous races and I did indeed mention how much it would suck to go a lap early. Yep, in October we had a guy sprint a lap early on a 2-hr race. He sprinted for all it was worth with me and another guy on his wheel at the 1 hr 57 min mark. Doh!
So, off we go and Labrat makes his move. Well played and before anyone knew it he was 10-15 seconds up the road. His teammate (the guy that eventually won) and another guy got with him. Two more guys got in the gap and I managed to get myself stuck in no-man's lap. After close to a full lap that way and seeing that I wasn't putting any time into those guys, I pulled back into the pack.
Then came the "chase" that couldn't chase. The guy that eventually won also eventually rode all his breakaway companions off his wheel. The motorcycle was telling us "25 seconds" then "30 seconds" then "40 seconds"... and I'm thinking, "This guy is putting time into us quick, we'd better stop it." So hammer I did. Two other guys made chase as well with a guy from "Joe's Bike Shop" stuck in the middle. He and I didn't "hit it off" of sorts. His method of chasing (or not chasing) was to get in the paceline but not rotate through. If it had been a teammate of the breakaway, I could understand the "subtle but not so subtle" blocking. This guy would come up behind the wheel he was following and when that guy pulled off, "Joe's" would soft pedal where he was and wait for a hole to get back on someone's wheel. Eventually I pulled up along side of him and got close enough he could hear (unintentionally shouldering hm, which he wasn't too keen on) and "yelled at him." He didn't appreciate it later either when I wouldn't let him have the wheel I was on as we were getting edged over to the gravel.
Anyway... as we rolled through 2 1/2 laps (or what I thought was 3 1/2) we caught the breakaway guy and off I went. 3 or 4 times we'd have 2-4 of us off the front but no one was interested in working together. Getting these folks to commit to staying away was next to impossible. As we were rounding the finish line on lap 4 (or in my case, 5), I was on the front of the pack with "original breakaway guy (OBG)" on my wheel and we were sorta soft pedaling at this point. Realizing that my sprint was going to be crap, I thought I'd offer up a leadout to OBG. I turned and said something to the effect of "You taking the sprint? I'll give the leadout" He looked at me and didn't say anything so I figured, "Ah, what the hell."
I unleashed my unholy sprint to find myself with a huge hole, the full "two arm salute." Of course, by this point it's apparent to the spectators and my fellow racers that I'm an idiot. OBG pulls up next to me and says "Dude, 1 more lap!"
Great... just great. So... I get to the top of the hill as the wheel truck passes me and debate soft pedaling a cool down lap. Then I figured, who knows, I could still do this. So, I put in an effort to bridge by the wheel truck and latched back on the group. I worked my way through and on the back side of the lap I got myself about 2/3 of the way through the pack when we hit the section of road the centerline was in effect. I worked up 1-2 spots at a time until we got to the 1km to go section. At this point I was still at least 15-20 riders off the front so rather than mangle myself in the downhill turns to sprint I just softpedaled through the end.
No telling how I would have done at the end of the day against OBG. He had an amazing engine working for him. I did an inordinately large amount of work that I shouldn't have in a "racing sense," but I'd personally rather ride hard and lose than suck wheel for 40km.

Nomad, thanks for the report. Hope you are feeling better soon. Looking forward to seeing that unholy engine of yours in action soon!!
^^great story Nomad, sounds like a fun race nonetheless.
Just a thought - you mentioned several times (in this and other posts) that folks in chases or breaks didnt want to work, wouldnt pull through or come around you, etc. Maybe the problem isnt them, sounds weird, but you being a big engine guy, maybe you're going too hard and blowing up your own break instead of tempering yourself and working with others to keep speed constantly high and increase the odds of a successful selection.
I had a team mate for the past 2 years that would do this all the time. He being a big engine guy would hammer to the point that he'd be floating 5 meters in front of the break much of the time, or blowing up his breakaway counterparts (myself often being one of them). He won solo a few times, but more often ended up cooked, the break would get caught, and he'd be out of matches.

perhaps some of these guys not doing any work fancied themselves sprinters just going along for the ride but werent concerned about having to sprint it out in the pack either.
