Mountain Biking - star nut question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I need to shorten my steer tube. Can I just pound the existing star nut further into the tube or should I remove it and use a new one?
Thanks in advance.

lol dont pound it in too far or else youll end up with two star nuts in there after it all :p
A 14mm socket works well.

Th socket will fit into the steerer tube and drive the nut down while keeping it straight.
