Foo - Whoooohoooo!!!! Daylight savings just in time!

I just can't wait- I know this may sound dorky, but I'm definitly staying in so I can sleep in and enjoy getting my hour back that got hijacked by the farmers in June. ;) I just want to wake up in the morning knowing what it feels like to get more sleep than normal. Then I guess on Sunday night, things go back to normal with the sleep patterns! :eek:

What are other folks going to do to celebrate the extra hour we're getting back?

Here in Queensland we're about 35 years behind the rest of Australia. Now while this is normally a bad thing, the good news is that we don't have to put up with any of that daylight savings rubbish. Unfortunately, I live just 22km from a state border, and New South Wales does insist on persisting with it, despite the fact that nobody who actually lives in New South Wales thinks it's a good idea. And it's already started in Tasmania. :(

Wishing I wasnt getting the extra hour back! Now it will be dark too early to ride after work with the group any more. Oh well.

wake up an hour earlier :) And recharge the bike light for my commute in the dark until next time change

I'm going to miss the daylight savings only in that it was fun getting up at 3:45am and getting daylight by 4:30am. Once it got to the point where daylight wasn't happening until after 7am, it wasn't cool anymore. It was annoying.

I always feel like I'm in a long term jetlag when we go into daylight savings- it really does suck. That one hour they take away knocks the wind out of me. Times like that, I feel like moving to Indiana... or at least the parts that don't change their clocks!

Feeling slightly bummed that sunset will be at 4:54 PM though. :( Still, the sunrise was at 6:17am, so that will help with the morning rides I do. :)

No more late rides after work with my pals, no more having light to do late activities with Samantha outside, no more riding for my wife in the daytime, oh yea it is really a blast to have tons of darkness.

I'm not a darn mushroom so I hate it.

Now it will be dark when I ride to work and dark when I ride home and with the seattle weather the next time I have a chance to see the sun again is in April ;)

That and farmers have powerful lights on their equipment now for night work. If we do repeal I vote for the extra hour of light at the end of the day!

I changed my work shift for daylight savings. I now work 2 - 10 so I can get my rides in before work. No point to coming home at 5:30 and having 20 minutes of twilight to ride with.

Joe, I will get to ride just fine but will miss riding with friends. And since my wifes work hours will have her working dark to dark I will have to deal with "bike withdrawals" which really make her grouchy.

Of course if she gets a spinning bike for her office it will be better. She will at least be able to get small hits of psuedo biking before the weekend.

The idea apparently pre-dates WWII by quite a bit, and seems to mostly be about saving energy, but yes, the US had "War Time" during WWII (all year 'round).

I guess when I suggested that we "ban daylight saving time," I really mean "ban standard time. I just think more people would be happier with a later sunset all year 'round, and that most folks would mind less if it was still a little dark out when they got started in the morning.

I just *hate* it being dark out when I leave work to head home. Even when I'm not riding.

Seconded. One of the advantages of moving to Queensland almost nine years ago was that we don't have it up here.

Oh, and one other thing -- what's so bad about riding at night? With proper lighting, I find it a more enjoyable experience than riding in daylight.

As my rides are in the morning, I just don't feel a lot of ya. I was getting tired of riding in complete darkness- at least now, I get a little bit of a break.

It does suck a little to have daylight ending so late in the day, but again... I'm not one for the afternoon/early evening rides at all. Maybe it's just because I live in the heart of Chicago downtown, and fighting the rush hour traffic, plus all those people that come out in the evening for their evening rides and runs is just too much- in order for me to get to a point where I can ride in peace, I have to go at least 15 miles out or so to get to better riding conditions. :( Mornings are always less hectic and less chaotic, so I prefer it. :)

Nothing really, I am just more of a day person in general. The thing I dislike about this time of year is all my weekday off time is in the dark.

DST sucks, but we got a little compensation during the weekend: SNOW, several cms of it. I had to go find my winter bike (studded tyres) to run errands. The white scenery makes the darkness a bit more bearable, but I hear this is just a temporary fix - gone during a week or so, says the weather man.

So it is back to recharging lights. I want a Stuby (http://www.lupine.de/en/bike/bike/index.html), but cannot really justify the cost. Maybe I should write to Santa?

When I first went to Hawaii, I wondered with all the water sports; why not have an extra hour of light to do fun things. Well, Hawaii is too close to the equator- does not matter. All year long it gets like 12 hours. The planet just does co-operate. Is that the case in Queensland.? Too close to the equator.

Yes, the summers are good. Up here you can go riding around the clock without lights if you want to. But we pay dearly during the winter months. I am writing this at about 5pm, it is dark already. Even if I left work at 4:30pm I would still need lights all the way home. And this will only get worse for the next two months or so.

Like ngateguy, I am not very happy if all my free time during weekdays is dark. DST is not good, it wakes up my inner pyromaniac. I burn tons of candles every winter.

I just went out and bought a TON of candles, including a candle chandelier. I guess the inner pyromaniac in all of us are awakened when wintertime hits.

I'll be in Sweden (hopefully) sometime in January- up in the northern part. I'm thinking they get like 6 hours of light a day up there. Uuugh!

Welcome to the Nordic countries then, Koffee. And should you go close or above the Arctic Circle in Sweden, you will get zip, zilch, zero hours of daylight in January. The Aurora Borealis are stunning, though. As a fellow closet-pyromaniac you will appreciate those, I am sure. :D

Actually, this would be my third trip to Sweden, but never this early in the year. (or is it the fourth, I can't remember at this point with all the vacationing I do) Anywhooooo... the last trip I did, we flew from Iceland to Stockholm, and we flew right in the Aurora Borealis. It was the freakiest experience I'd had on a plane- almost like a Twilight Zone episode. At any point, I expected a Gremlin to jump on the wing or something. :D

Actually, I'm thinking I'll be in Lulea sometime around Feb 6th or so. I'll be flying in from a pretty warm climate too, so that will be twice as painful. :-/ :D

My native state is Michigan. Think it common, those regions that straddle the western area of any time zone have really divisive campaigns for DST. The western part of the state wanted to be on Central Time Zone.
Those in the Eastern part of the state are industrial workers wanting DST, the western part farmers who favored Central Standard Time..
The state legislature enacted Eastern Savings Time. Opponents (farmers)fought hard through initiative to stop Savings Time. An election resulted and Savings Time barely won. Seems Arizona, on western fringe of Mountain Time, had the same bitter fight over Mountain Savings Time. Think only state not to go to Savings time.
In the summer the northern part of the state stays light until close to 10 pm.. Once I flew into Detroit in mid-November. Landed at almost 9am . Still dark. Whats' up!I could not hack that. When riding back on a late afternoon ride,nice not to have to beat the sunset.

Not really. Queensland just has this weird culture (dating back to the Jo Bjelke Petersen days, and possibly before that) in which it seems to believe it's a country within itself. You wouldn't believe the number of people I've had the displeasure of being unable to avoid meeting, who think Queensland should start a war against the "evil southern states". Hey, don't ask me why, I only live here!

I've got to admit that I love that extra hour of sleep.

Chris..In the US, we had that Great War to dissolve the union. It is the myth in the U.S.North of the inferiority of the South.( But then I don't like the climate of muggy, hot,I must admit.)
But anyway. In the southern hemisphere, does the same silly war exist between north and south? Maybe it is the temperate climates that think they need rule.? Off topic, but an interesting one. This phomenon exist in the southern hemisphere.?

I'm all for repealing DST, damn farmers ;) However I like "real" time, so short afternoons it is. They work us hard enough that I have been riding home in the dark since Sept. anyway.

Not really a north vs south thing, just typical Queensland paranoia. I could make a whole list of laws and various other things that "only apply in Queensland", but my lunch break isn't long enough. Either way, they did manage to get the decision not to have DST right here, even if they buggered up a lot of other things.
