I don't know what a megabus is, but according to megabus.com

Can I take my bicycle?

Unfortunately megabus.com buses are unable to carry bicycles.

It's true. It needs to be in a "bike box". Often times, just a bike with the wheels off in a box...

^^^ Put it in a box. It's a bus, not a plane, so you might even be able to smudge it by putting your bike in a big bag or whatever.

I've taken the MB about ten times now round trip from Chicago to Columbus.

I ALMOST picked up a used Pista out in Columbus but backed out when the site said that bicycles were not permitted....

But...the next time I took the MB from Chi to c-bus...a guy nods at the driver and throws his MKV in the bottom storage and jumps on the bus.

I really think if you call ahead, that you can get it approved. But you could always just try your luck.

They seem to be sort of a start-up competing with Greyhound between cities. They cherry-pick profitable runs. Baggage is limited to a 50ish pound suitcase in baggage and one carry-on. So you had better have a folder.

Megabus is awesome, but as far as bikes go, it's a don't-ask-don't-tell proposition. Try to box your bike up, and throw it on. Most times, the driver doesn't even get out of the cab while people are loading up. I know who people who've thrown bikes on the bus, sans-box, even pretty recently, and without a problem, but I've also heard of plenty of people who've been left on the sidewalk because the driver wouldn't let them put their bike onboard.

Get a couple of $20 bills in order to grease the palm of the driver if he gives you any trouble. Just ask, "How much does it cost to get a bike onboard? Here, I have some money..." and hold it out.

just get a soft case that you can fold up and strap to your messenger bag once you reach your destination. Check Performance Bike:

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=20104&subcategory_ID=4415

They have 17% off a single item today. Megabus won't give you any trouble if your bike is in a bag when they show up.

I just dunno if I'd wanna throw my bike in the bottom of a bus. Maybe I worry too much. . .
