Alright,

Having a slight bit of a disagreement with a few people. My favourite cyclocross friend/mentor who i totally trust says to go with the Smarties/Candy's. alot of people i talk to say the Mallet's because they have more surface.

I ride my bike old school Schwinn le Tour Single Speed bike for alot of commuting/hauling random things around and I also have made it my cyclocross bike for the upcoming season (Did one CX race on it and it worked out great).

I'm not clipped in now and want to be clipped in (I have egg beaters on my fixed/track bike) for the races...

So what is the final verdict? Crank Brothers Smarty's or Crank Brothers Mallets?

I know they both have their pro's and cons and like i said... my mentor says to go with the Smarty's... and i'm leaning towards that. LET ME KNOW BIKEFORUMS.... I heart you guys!

I have Smarties, but I'm not sure I like them. They seem to be hard to clip into.

I'd get the candy's. The smarty's work well, but are a low end pedal. They don't have sealed bearings, and the dust caps break off quite easily. The candy's are the same thing, but will last much longer for only 15-20 dollars more.

I know a lot of people that cross in eggbeater, SL's or higher end of the line. It seems like the smallish surface area would be a problem but you learn to trust them and they shed mud like the dickens. Worth a consideration if you already have those and like them. Maybe give them a try before you switch.
