Southern California - A couple of new groups riding out of Whittier...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Whittier is right next door to me and there's a couple of cool groups just starting up...We Love Riding and (5Fix2).
I had the pleasure to ride with (5Fix2) today on their Lonesome Sunday's ride. There were seven of us and we did just under 28 miles (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1655697) with a stopover at a deserted mental hospital...spooky...:)

Their next ride is Monday night and they have a thread at lafixed.com.
So...Sunday afternoons at 12:30 and Monday nights at 7:30

That hospital is in Downey. I work at the neighboring Rancho Los Amigos Nat. Rehab Center on Wednesdays.
I may get lights for my bike and go riding with your fun group!
My Giant Anthem might be better suited for Mishap Mondays. Better to take my road bike, though?

Bring the roadie out there on Mondays...:)
Whittier, huh? I'm really tempted to cruise out there tonight, being in La Habra and all.

How about that mtb trail near Turnbull Cyn? I heard there some freaky stuff out there (well, used to).
And another thing, where was this group when I lived up there?! :) J/K

Oh I have ridden that trail many times...
The stories! Murders, dumped bodies, hangings, devil worshipping...
Ghosts...
Right??

One time I rode it, there was a old guy that was walking down the trail with a large walking stick. He had a very large beard, and looked homeless. Kind of creepy given the circumstances surrounding that trail.
Is that trail 'cross-friendly? With just hints of stories like that I *have* to ride it; I ride the road frequently but never the trail.

Aww, that looks fun.
Wish it were closer. A pox on the vile time-space continuum!
The asylum gives me the willies. Foucault would have a thing or two to say about it.

I live in South Whittier, so I'd like to try one of these rides, but I don't have a fixie. I do have a single-speed. Is that close enough?
No?
Okay, well . . . I didn't think so.

If you get on at Beverly (where the little parking lot is) and stick to the fire road all the way up to the second water tower you should be fine.

Yo Alice,
Yes, I can take being the "Old Guy!" I've been so old for so long . . . no problem!
Was your "ha ha you are joking right?" about my single-speed (i.e. ha ha it's not a fixie?).
And it is a road bike, but I can fit some cyclo-cross tires if these rides go off-road. So I'm asking, are these on - road, or off - road dirt trails . . . or both?

These two particular new groups are on the street, more in the tradition of Midnight Ridazz-type social rides.
The "ha ha" was about your single speed. I did the Lonesome Sunday ride on my geared road bike.
Turnbull Canyon was off-topic? Have you hiked or ridden there?
I rode (5fix2) last night . . . nice group of people. Tim, you gotta go!

Yo Alice (again, or still . . . ),
I've never ridden "Midnight Ridazz" so no clue there (wutcha talkin' 'bout woman?) .
I have riddin Turnbull (a lot), in fact I'll ride it this afternoon from the Beverly side, then hit some more climbs and ride back from the Hacienda Hts. side. I've never done it on my single-speed, but I'm confident it would be do-able (42t x 16t) even if I did have to stand a lot.
Always on-road Turbbull though; never tried the mountain bike trails. I do see lots of mountain bikers up there every time I road-ride it, so it must be good!

Yes, Turnbull is nice for mountain biking and hiking...
Rick, Midnight Ridazz is here (http://www.midnightridazz.com/)...
Essentially it's an "internet cycling phenomenon" a kind of party on wheels somewhat...most of the rides take advantage of how sleepy LA streets can be after about 9PM, especially downtown Los Angeles.
Some of the rides are massive...hundreds of bikes of all kinds, a moving sea of blinkies.
Really it's a website for people to post bike rides.:)
Tell us more...:)
I zonked out early last night.
We had about 7 people show up, which isn't bad considering it was St. Patrick's day. We rolled out a little after 8pm and initially head towards Whittwood via MarVista then we headed towards Norwalk via Mulberry. It was good to meet some riders :)
BTW I'm familiar with riding out of Uptown Whittier as I was a co-founder of Two Wheel Take Over, and lived in Whittier in for roughly 16 years.
Please keep me in the loop about future rides . . . I'm planning to do the Mustache Ride this Saturday night, and the ride Sunday afternoon.
peace!
