Road Cycling - need list of Shimano road groupo's

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm rebuilding an old road bike (Trek 1200) for a winter project and I will need:

Crankset
Brake levers / shifters
Rear deraileur

Can someone list the Shimano models, maybe from bottom to top of the line?

I've been away from the road bike market for awhile, and I want this for reference as I watch for closeout deals...

TIA

Note that Sora levers are 8-speed, while all the other groups are 9-speed.

The Shimano USA site has finally added diagrams and service sheets to their site.

Thanks. This bike came with 105 about 10 years ago, I didn't realize they still made that groupo. I looked at the Trek sight and this bike now has a triple, mine came with a double but I wouldn't be opposed to running a triple on it for the rebuild.

Maybe one more question. I saw that the new bikes are welded, but my bike had zero welds, instead they did some kind of epoxy bonds at the joints to reduce the weight. Have any of you heard about them having trouble with this setup? I would hate to find out I had a weak joint going downhill at about 50 MPH...

you mean lugged joints..

These lugged frames are strong. They still make lugged frames now. Some Steel and Ti frames are still made with lugs.

I ride a CrMo lugged frame. I think lugs make the frame a work of art.

Yeah, bonded/lugged treks are no longer made. The Chain Reaction page mentions them on one of their pages. Let me see if I can dig it up.

Thanks flop, good information on that link. I figured they built them that way because they were cheaper. I just finished stripping it down to the bare frame and it is very light, but then again my projects have been dh mtn bikes the last couple years and a Huffy is light compared to those...

Go ultegra, good quality without slamming the budget.
