Hello all

Not a serious request for advice - but I'm just curious about whether all you pleasant and co-dependent cyclists are unanimous in saying 'Yea go for it', or not.

When folk say 'I'm thinking of a new bike' or 'I'm thinking of a tour', the responses are always 'yea, go for it'. No-one seems to say 'steady on, aren't you a bit undertrained?'

Next Friday morning (our weekends are Friday and Saturday) there's a 'sprint duathlon'. 3 km run, 25 km bike, 5 km run. There should be about 30 participants, none of whom I can hold on to either running or cycling. Navy Seals, competitive triathletes, noone apart from me who regards comfort and pie as essential bike ride components.

The distances aren't huge, and I have about 20 running marathons and a few 100 km per day 20 day tours under my belt - so completing isn't a worry. But coming last by half an hour - a big bit of me says 'where's the pleasure in that?'

Ok - I'm listening;)

Do you think you might want to enter more duathlons or triathlons? If so, you have to start sometime. I will admit the tri I entered in Dec 2007 had a much more favorable range to athletes, and I didnt think I would come in last.

You better get it while you can,
Yes, you better get it while you can.
If you wait too long, it'll all be gone
And you'll be sorry then.
It doesn't matter if your rich or poor,
And it's the same for a woman or a man,
From the cradle to the crypt
Is a mighty short trip.
So, you better get it while you can.

Your 50+..........no one can fault you for finishing last in a group of Seals and Jocks. You can enjoy the experience untainted by expectations. Go for it. You'll respect yourself in the morning. (so will many others)

You don't need a new bike.

I think - so long as you don't lose sight of comfort and pie as your priorities, you really need to go for this!

I guess it depends on whether you will enjoy it for the exercise and challenge or only enjoy it only if you are competitive. If it is the former go for it.

Do it!

Of course, there's no point in being anal about this kind of thing. If, in your opinion, the rest of the racers aren't going to wait for you to finish, why do you feel it's necessary to wait for them to start?

Oh pay attention Beverley, you delightful and inattentive cycling friend - I've already crashed the whole electonic interwebthingy with my new bike stories. RockyMountain Solo 50St, half steel half carbon, 6 months and 3000 kms so far, and I luuuurve it. And, one of the many things about it, It's white and navy blue

I should have joined the navy

Just teasing, my friend, as I'm sure you know. Keep us in touch with your future purchase plans. I couldn't be happier with my new bike, which is why I'm already thinking of a similar upgrade to the long bike. None of which has to do with the present thread, so sorry to go OT on something I started. Forgive?;)

Get a T-shirt that says "Wobbly Old Geezer" and go for it. A telescopic cane you can pull out prior to crossing the finish line would be a nice touch also. :D

Hi friend! I say life is short. Go for it or go for something that will prepare you for it. Go for the rational step to take you to your dream, but don't just jump in and go for it if it will kill you or your spirit.

You don't need a new bike.

You may feel that you are going to be slow- but can almost guaranty- You will not be the last. These young fit Macho men- will put everything into the first run-Then a lot into the bike ride to keep up with the front runners. Then you will have your chance to show that experience will come to the fore.

And as to the new bike---Can see a Time trial coming ahead- so get out looking now for when it comes up.

My thought when reading this was wow, what a notch in the ole belt to have finished ahead of some Seals or Jocks!!!!! Our first group ride of the season(at least one that I could make) had a group of younger racers and some extremely strong 50+ers. I am determined to at least finish in the pack as the season progresses! Nothing like stoking the competitive fires.

If you feel compelled to ask, then do it...

I on the otherhand, if confronted with a duathalon or triathalon would simply ignore it... it would go away I am sure. ;)
