"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Fred move.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I went for a great 3 hour ride yesterday, then got home and noticed I hadn't taken the race number off of my wind vest. God I feel like a dork. "Look at me everyone, I'm a bike racer!"
Anyone else pull this Fred move before?

we have a winter crit series. I pin the number to my vest and only took it of yesterday, after the last race of the series. So yes, I rode with the number pinned on. Not because I'm shouting "LOOK AT ME, I RACE" but because I'm too lazy to take off the 7 safety pins after every race.

I've done that a few times, where I'll go and do a group ride right after a race (crit usually) that's close and leave my number on on accident. Gets some weird looks, and you feel a little stupid after but it happens.
do yo keep ski lift tags on your winter jacket as well? ;)

I've washed my jersey before with the numbers still pinned on.

I do this occasionally. But I won't normally ride with that jersey outside of races.

That is not a Fred move. A Fred move is forgetting the mirror is still attached to your sunglasses, and wearing them when you drive to the store.
I've seen someone around where I train that has had the same number hanging off their top tube for a couple years now. Either they're really lucky to be getting that same number all the time, they're too lazy or they really want everyone including themselves to think they race.

There are many Fred moves, but yes, wearing a mirror on your sunglasses to the store is higher up the Fred-o-meter than going for a training ride with a race number pinned to your jersey.

I don't own a helmet or glasses mirror. Don't you have a relative to bugger?

You may want it to say:”I’m too lazy to take it off” but it really says “focus on me, the BIKE RACER.”
Remember, the recipient’s perception is a major part of communication.

No. And the move is "fred" not because you left your number pinned onto your jersey, but because you wore the same jersey you just raced in. Unless your ride was from the race, in which case you are forgiven.

We had a new guy join the group ride today. Really nice guy, comes from running, wearing a running shirt (not cotton). Clearly a noob, so we took him to do sprints with us.
Not sure when it happened, but he came back with the most crisp, clear chainring tattoo I think I've ever seen
We'll fix him up right after a few more rides.

Actually, it wasn't the same jersey I raced in, it was my wind vest. Still a Fred move.

I leave the number from the Central Park Race on when I zip out to catch the Nyack Ride. It's like a badge from the Pcad Bag of Excuses that says 'Yeah, I'm getting shelled, but I already RACED this morning you friggin weenies, what's your excuse?'. Actually it's more like it's too much of a pain in the ass to take all the crap out of my pockets, take the jersey off, take the number off, and reassemble everything.
But Pcad hangs tough regardless. By the way plenty of other guys who race and then catch Nyack also do the same. You can call us Freds, but only if you can drop us. And yes Dr. W., I realize that would be no problem for you.

If the number was there to communicate something, then I would certainly give consideration to the audience's interpretation.
Seeing as I don't deliberately plan on encountering anyone when i'm out riding (and if I do encounter someone, I don't intend on communicating with them other than "on your left"), the audience's interpretation is of little or no concern to me.

Sorry dude, if you're an idiot, I can't fix you. If only I gave a ****. Alas, I am unconcerned.

The image you present communicates information about yourself, and you will be judged thereupon. Egocentrism makes you look like a goof, but apparently you guys are ok with that. ;)

If the perception of Egocentrism was a big issue for Pcad, would he refer to himself in the third person?
If image was a big issue for Pcad would be post this photo on a regular basis?

A lot of the riders in my area, mostly in the lower grades, leave their reflectors, blinky rear light, headlight, pump and saddlebag still attached at crit races. I deem this to be fred like. I always take all this crap off before a race. It's not like in the middle of a crit and you get a flat that you are going to whip out a spare tube and swap it over and then rejoin and have any chance of getting a result.

not only 'fredlike', but also against the rules. at least on the other side of the atlantic.

The Fred move is wearing the mirror in a race in the first place....
