View Full Version : Rob Roy Group Buy Photos
Looking good guys. I'd have gone in on this but I'm saving up for a mountain bike. IRO doesn't make hardtail frames, do they?
There's a guy on campus who comutes on a blue Rob Roy. It's a pretty bike.
I talked with Tony around December, he told me that he was designing a new 29'er hardtail and IIRC a mountain frame....don't know the details

Yeah, I bet. Get your @$$ over here and ride it! Put another 26 miles on it last night at the trails, wow. There is something about how this thing shoulders on runups, so smooth and almost effortless. I couldn't be happier with the ride.
I am very dissappointed in the canti-mounts though, seems they are too high on the seat stays which limits you in the dropout. I can only use the front 1/3-1/2 of the dropout, anything further back and the brake pads rub the tires. Very frustrating cause it limits flexibility with quick gearing changes.

Agreed. I had to get a half-link to be able to set my wheel back from the very front of the dropout with my current gearing combo, 700x35 panaracer tire, and avid shorty 4 canti's. Are there maybe some canti's out there with a little more travel on the arm that will allow the wheel to go a bit further back in the dropout?
build finally done:

(edit to replace picture)
i think my rear wheel's in the back 3rd of the droput - but the brakes i'm using are super-adjustable (almost to the point of insanity, really).
i like it so far (just a quick spin around the block), but i think i'm going to have to get a larger chainwheel.

I would, but then I would just be sad at how much faster you've gotten than me in a short time. :(
My canti-mounts seem to be in a bad place as well. Maybe you've just infected my thoughts!

So what are these super-adjustable brakes you are sporting?
vintage OnZa H.O.'s.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/jhota42/Lbrake91.jpg
the pad holder slides up and down and rotates on the vertical shaft, there's the usual smooth-rod canti pad adjustment setup, and the spring tension is pretty much infinitely adjustable with a cone wrench.
downsides are the fact they're no longer made, finicky, and somewhat fragile (they're made from machined aluminium, not forged, so ham-fisted wrenching shatters them. literally.).
Done.

Who says we're all guys? Billygoat is a shemale.
finally rode mine by the LBS and hung it on their scale: 21.5 lbs on the dot. which isn't bad, considering the frame's just straight-gauge and i'm running a downhill crankset.
I'm having a hell of a time figuring out the cockpit. I had some origin8 gary bars but I ain't liking those, I don't think I'd like midge any better because I like something like 42-44cm wide bars, beyond that my shoulder gets pinched for some reason... I wanna set it up to be in the drops the whole time but it seems like I'll need a freakishly long stem... I just can't get any bikes to fit me lately.
I've ridden it around and I love the way it feels, but I just can't get the cockpit right.
ugh i want one. who wants to part with their 53cm frame

IRO's new website is up and they are listing the RR as in stock, in apparently all sizes, in green and orange (no flat black)...
hey, if anyone here missed out on the group buy i have a 56cm orange frame i'm willing to part with - i would love to keep the frame but i am completely out of money... so pm me if you're interested
decided (since it's my new commuter) to see how well some old (late 80s, early 90s) Blackburn racks i had lying around would fit:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/jhota42/racks.jpg
not too bad for racks designed for 26" wheels...
(edit: i know i drink too much. and need to do dishes.)

Could someone please post a photo of their ridiculously over-the-top race bike incarnation of the Rob Roy? I need some motivation to start building mine up before August.

I finally gave up on the hoods. The drops are about 5 cm below the saddle. The drops are so comfortable and the width gives me excellent control. The tops are about 5 cm above the saddle and I use them to sit up and stretch on occasion, but I absolutely love the drop position! I think my previous unsatisfying attempts were either due to being too low or having too long a reach. The RR and Midges are just right for me.
The old Mac?
there's four compact Macs, a MacTV (http://lowendmac.com/500/macintosh-tv.html)and a Powerbook 165 (http://lowendmac.com/pb/powerbook-165.html) visible (or partially visible) in that photo. there's also a classic 40SC zero footprint hard drive under the Mac SE (http://lowendmac.com/compact/macintosh-se.html) on the far right. (the two other compact Macs are a Plus (http://lowendmac.com/compact/macintosh-plus.html) and a pair of Classic II (http://lowendmac.com/compact/macintosh-classic-ii.html)s).
yes, i have a computer problem. particularly since you can't see the 14 additional vintage Macs (or the two Newton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Newton)s) in my apartment...
and then there's the other old Apple hardware and pre-Mac computers, and all the leftover PC stuff, and my current MacBook Pro, and my Windows desktop...
i need "computers anonymous." though i've been doing pretty well, not having bought any old hardware in over a year.
Here be my Rob Roy finally.

The wrap on the toptube is an experiment to add a grippy surface for grabbing and some padding for shouldering. I'm kind of liking it. I would prefer brown bar tape but the stuff doesn't exist unless you go leather. The tape on the toptube is what I first put on the bars (nashbar natural). The bars are origin8 gary's and I think I figured them out almost. The wheels are temporary cheapies I took off an old hybrid.
I've already got 3 scratches on it because I'm an idiot- they were all the handlbar without plug swinging into the top tube. Gar.

Anyone got an uncut orange fork they want to sell? I have one cut down about 2" (still uses about 2" of spacers on a 54 frame) that I can trade, or will buy an uncut fork outright. I'd be interested in a black fork as well.

Nice use of Power Grips. :) I went home a few weekends back to visit my mom and found a ... geez, 14 year-old pair of Power Grips out in the garage. I think I might use those on my winter bike this year.
