Here's my Orange 52cm with parts stolen from my Surly Steamroller. Haven't decide if I want to go singlespeed, fixed or nexus 8. Right now only wheel I have that is spaced for 130mm is my road wheel.

those are Scott AT-4s. about 20 years old now. an early attempt at an integrated aero bar for mountain bikes. not long enough for good aero positioning, though. i like them because i'm used to them (20 years of using the same bars will do that). they're also really stiff and fairly light for bars their size (54 cm wide).

I know I have a more suitable stem somewhere. This is the last chance I'm giving the Midge bars. Ignore the barend shifter; I didn't take it off from my previous experiment. My intent was to make this an all-black bike and not buy any parts but use what I had. However, I couldn't remove the ISIS BB from the other bike to fit the black crankset, so silver it is.

Didn't like 'em, eh? I didn't either, but I probably didn't have them up high enough (and the steerer tube on my cross check was cut too short by the previous owner to get them much higher). Maybe I'll be able to make 'em work on the Rob Roy.

I love the shallow drops; I don't like the short length of the drops. I saw on MTBR somebody using a long bar plug (wine cork? wood dowel?) to extend the drop length an inch or so; worth a try.
I don't like the positioning of the hoods, either. If I position the hoods to be a riding position I can't reach the brake levers from the drops. If I lower the levers to be reached from the drops I can't ride in the hoods. I think I need to get off this princess-and-the-pea thing and go ride.

Fenders on wet roads are great but (plastic) fenders suck riding on rough offroad trails and from the looks of that bike in pics posted in another thread, it looks like he did some offroading....I'd rather just have mud slung on my back than deal with the clanging and rattling. A front fender can catch onto tire tread, which can actually fold the fender and force it through the fork, thus locking the wheel and throwing you over the bars. It happened to me.
As for the stem, he says he wants his bars higher...they look fredly high enough to me.

If he really wants to be comfortable with Midge, he needs a higher stem. Forget about the hoods position, and get the drops high enough to be comfortable all the time.

I finished my build last night. My Midges are in approximately the same place-- if they were any higher, it would make the top of the bars pretty much unusable. I prefer two usable hand positions over just one.

Just a bit more to go on my commuter build. I took it for a 5-6 mi shakedown ride today after fitting the last parts, and I love it. As good or better than I dared hope for, I like this frame a lot more than a Mark V I had a while back. The RR will make for a perfect commuter.

Still have to mount the fenders and lights, but highlights include a Nexus 8 Red Band internal gear hub out back (19x46 drivetrain), a Shimano dynamo hub up front, and Brooks B17 Special saddle. The bars are Nitto Moustache in 25.4/mtn diameter, which lets me fit the Alfine rapidfire shifter on the inside of the brake levers. This makes them accessible from the front part of the bars, where I like to be most of the time anyway (and where the brakes are set up to be), just a tad not 100% optimum positioning but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Much better accessibility and looking than the revo/grip-shift carbuncle at the end of drop bars like I've seen on other similar rigs (IMO), but still a chunk of shifter unit hanging out there in the breeze from some angles. I'd originally planned for drop bars, but I've been using the mbars on commuter bikes for a while and find them comfortable. No way the shifter will fit 26.0 bars, so it was a no-brainer to use my regular bars instead.

I got the adjustable stem to figure out the ergos. But it actually facillitates some really great cable routing, so it might stay. I drilled out the stem so I could use it as a cable hanger. The brake cable housing is braided stainless and I replaced the shifter housing with the same stuff. Makes the stem a bit robotix compared to the rest of the bike, but I like the effect. The stem is a chunk of metal, though, so once I dial everything in after riding for a while, I'll probably swap it out for something a bit lighter. Gotta figure out something better than black electrical tape and zip ties for the shifter cable, too. Some vintage cable guides might look sweet.

I had a Van Dessel SuperFly that got stolen. It had the Nexus 7 IG hub, and I liked it well enough. The Red Band 8sp version I just got feels even better--the rapidfire shift action is a lot more substantial and precise without being too clunky. The uneven ratio jumps between gears remains a minor annoyance I know I'll get used to again. Since the SuperFly was liberated from me, I've been back on derailleur bikes, and now this new IG hub. I don't notice any great drag or loss of efficiency on the road, but I've yet to do my regular 17 mi commute or any real distance yet. Or run the lights off the front hub.

While riding, I thought, "Wow, this turned out to be even better than I expected." That doesn't tend to happen too much in my life, so I'm psyched beyond words. Yes it will end up being totally over the top commuter geeky, but that's it's mission in my life.

That build is totally awesome. If I had money, I would buy a Nexus hub and build mine up as a commuter/tourer. Single speed is cheaper now, though.

they look dorky, but the drops need to be closer to the seat height to de comfortable offroad.
i want a higher stem so i can take out some of the inch+ of spacers that're already on there

18.7lbs as pictured. Some would call it fancy I guess for a frame that cost so little. The reality is that this frame has proven itself over the years to be a fantastic combination of good geometry and tubing. The ride is even better than expected. Only disappointment is the powdercoat, part of the reason I went in on the GB was because I wanted this color. In the end, doesn't really matter b/c the frame should be beat to heck after the first race season and many miles on mountain trails...

There's a guy on campus who comutes on a blue Rob Roy. It's a pretty bike.

The cross lever pulls the front brake (along with the right front lever, left front lever operates the rear). I posted a question about this last week and had some debate - most folks disagreed with the routing and purpose of a single extra lever, but I'll say on my test ride, it was really nice to have. It won't help too much in emergency situation I think, but it was nice to not have to move my hand position away from the back part of the bar when coming to a casual stop or just to scrub speed. Oh, and that's an Airzounds horn that I tried out for the first time - f'ing loud! Like hurt my ears loud - sure did get the attention of the car that passed me a little too close for comfort though.
