Hey kids. I am considering doing this ride after work just wanted to see how safe it is? I am concerned about the PCH portion. Any advice is appreciated.

I never really consider timing when I ride on PCH. It's only as safe as the drivers that are out there and you can never predict something like that. Just be visible, predictable and alert.

Around 5, the traffic is spotty because you could have a traffic incident on the 405 so that everyone dumps onto PCH... However, northbound is a little heavier than southbound in my experience and generally manageable at that time of day... the bad section is probably going to be the commercial strip before the Newport Blvd bridge. After that the road generally opens up and you have a wide shoulder to ride in.

Newport Blvd. Bridge: FWIW, there is an underpass you can use to bypass the Blvd.. Heading north, cross to harbor side at Riverside, take the sidewalk all the way up to the Bridge and follow the path (the lower one, below the offramp) and it takes you to the marina, under the bridge and onto the sidewalk which you could take all the way to Superior.

Most of the time, I find the ramp up to Newport Blvd. to be a hassle. Just be alert and use your hand signal to claim for yourself. Traffic does tend to get crazy there on some evenings.

This is the route on my upcoming commute, and this info is useful.
