Road Cycling - Did anyone use the extra hour today to take a great ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I tend not to be the up-and-riding-early type, but today I decided to use the end-of-daylight-savings-time dividend to take a ride I've been wanting to do for a few weeks. The fact that we are having a bit of a heatwave (it was about 82 degrees at my house) with brilliant sunny weather was a bit of a motivator.

I have been wanting to ride from Watsonville, where I live, to Monterey. It's about a 60 mile round trip. Weekends are best for this trip since not matter how you pick your route, you still have to do a good chunk of the ride on state Hwy 1. It always has a lot of traffic, but on Sundays you are not going to get sucked up by passing semis. For about a third of the trip there is dedicated bike path that mostly runs next to Hwy 1. (It seems so nice and safe, but last year a car went out of control and went down an embankment to the bike path killing a cyclist).

A real joy for me about this ride is that it is on flat to rolling terrain, with great views of Monterey Bay and the sand dunes. What that also means is that the wind can be a killer at times. That's where the early start was great. I should have probably started earlier, since I had a brisk headwind in the last 15 miles. But I'm not complaining, this ride was everything I had hoped for. I feel sad that what is such great weather around here is causing such a fire disaster in souterhn California.

So did anyone else make good use of the extra hour for riding?

Nope- used that extra hour for a great sleep, though!

I did!

I'm an early riser, so at 6:15am (sunrise) I was out and about!

Love to cycle in the early morning, since you get the great morning sunrise, and very few cars on the road.

NO. Rained all day.

24 hours later and it's still raining, so I won't ride today either.

I was up at 5:45 AM Sunday getting ready for the Depot-to-Depot Metric Century
http://trailexpress.com/sct_events_registration_depot2.shtml
and PRAYING that it wouldn't rain. Had all my stuff in the car and was about to put the bike on the roof rack (6:30 AM) when the rain started. And it continued all day and part of the night. :fight: :crash:

It's now Monday morning and the roads are still wet and the weather guessers are saying we may have more rain. The high temperature for the day was this morning at 6 AM. It's supposed to get colder as the day progresses. I guess autumn is finally here. :crash:

I hate rain, cold, autumn, winter...

I am by nature an early riser. I was up by 5 A.M., checked weather.com to see what it'd be like, ate breakfast, and set out. The web said it was about 60 degrees with an 8-10mph wind from the northwest.

I dressed for that, and within 20 minutes I was soaked in sweat! It was 60, but the humidity was way up and it was so pleasant after I removed one layer that I spent the extra hour cycling.

Wish every fall Sunday was like that!

I didn't get in any extra miles because of the time change but I did have a good ride yesterday. I went out on the club A-ride but decided in advance that I was not going to attempt the whole thing. This was probably a good idea as a number of riders from the pro squad showed up!

At around the 10 mile mark, I took a shorter, but steeper, route with four other guys that put me in front on the main bunch and we were able to hold the peloton off until we reach the first regroup point. I then was able to hang in up to the summit. I had a mechnical on the descent and two other riders stopped to help with repairs. Ended up with about 66 miles for the day.

No. But I do work 12 hour midnight shifts at the moment, so I had the pleasure of working a 13 hour shift.

It never works for the common folk. When I was in the Navy, my ship crossed the International Dateline several times. One way, we would lose a day, and it was always Sunday. The other way, we would have two Tuesdays. What a crock!

But at least the old salts could always win an easy bet, using "the second Tuesday of next week" as an integral part.
