try again, I need an e-type BB. That would make the UN-72-E. but thanks for looking.

Doh,

I did not see the e-type :(

This will be tough to find.

I don't see such a thing listed in the QBP catalog. There is a Deore UN40 E-Type Cartridge bottom bracket, but not in 68-113. What does the E designate? Easy-set?

What does the E designate?

If memory serves, I believe it's used to designate Shimano BB's that were spec'd for use with their bottom bracket mounted front derailleurs (see photo at link).

I found the deore one at bikeman, I believe you can also use the Truvative sqare taper BB, they use a spacer to amke the BB work with 68 BB and you remove it for the 73 or if you have a Chain guard etc...

RainmanP basicaly the E designates it is has extra width in the BB itself to accomondate a FD/chain guard mounting directly on the BB itself.

OK, now I understand what it is. Here is what my warped mind came up with. Tell me if it is possible/practical. My guess is that this special type bb is not cheap. Nor is the special front der it may require. Standard bottom brackets are cheap as are standard FDs. Unless you just want to stick with original stuff or there are compelling reasons to do so
, why not just get a plain old UN-72 and a plain old clamp on front der?

there's just one problem with your theory...it's called chainline. When you use a regular bb on an e-type derailleur, you push the chainline out a couple of mm. Another problem is that I am not using the E-type derailleur, I'm using a chainguide that uses the same mount point. I only have one chainring in the front and 9 in the rear. so I need to get the e-type for the cmpensation to chainline. it makews the drive side bb cup a little longer so as to keep the spindle centered in the bb shell. thus givin a perfect chainline every time. :D BTW I checked on the price, and a LBS here has them for about 40 bux.

If you have managed to make this work in all nine speeds, I would LOVE to see pictures.

That's the way my P3 came setup already. That's how a DH rig works as well. Single ring in the middle ring position, and 9 in the rear, it's really not hard. You do need a chainguide, and if you don't have the ISCG tabs, you WILL need an E type bottom bracket.
