I have decided to cycle from Finland to Spain, a distance of about 4200km The odd thing is, that this will be the first time I cycle over 35km. The journey will begin in 2009, so I have a lot of time to prepare for it. What do I need to know? I Want to do it in less than four weeks, is that possible?

Welcome to the Forums!

4200 kms in 4 weeks means more than 1000 kms per week, which in turn translates to over 150 kms per day, every day (assuming no rest days). Possible? The fact that you posted this in Long Distance Cycling leads me to think you're looking at it as some kind of a challenge or a race. With proper training I think it's not entirely impossible (but that means you will spend many days riding waaay more than 35kms before the trip). You will also have to plan your routes and arrange accommodation, meals and other support carefully. You will not want to carry everything and a kitchen sink with you on a trip like this.

If on the other hand you want to see places, smell the roses, not spend much money and have everything you need with you - that's a tour, and it's not going to happen with the distances you're looking at. I plan my tours for around 80-100kms per day, and always leave margin for rest days.

So, what is it you're looking for? A race or a tour?

A pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. That basically means, that the days are long, but I need time to see where I'm going.
