i am about to build a new wheel for my fixed geare bike, the wheel was a 27" mtb wheel with a good hub so i ordered a new rim and i am going to build a front wheel (more for just doing it then anything else) how do i know what size spokes i will need. Is there some way to measure what length i will need.

There are a number of online spoke calculators to assist with this. DT Swiss has one on their website, and there are several others if you do a Google search.

take it where you're gonna buy the spokes and have them measure it, watch them do it. well, watch them sift through two pages of sizes/years for a given manufacturer *then* measure it lol (which is what we used to do).

it's safer if you haven't done the measuring before, since if the measurements are wrong it will be their mistake.

Sounds like you may want to take the rim and hub to your LBS and have them set you up with what you need. :)
