The Historian and I are going to ride from Pittsburgh to DC this summer along the C&O/ Allegheny trail, and we're using the ride to raise money for Epilepsy research. As an epileptic myself, this is of course a purely selfish motivation. :D
If you'd like to contribute, please head over here (http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/ecommunities/heroes/index.cfm?user_id=1370). Even if its a tiny amount, every little bit helps!
We'd be happy to meet up with fellow BFers along the way. Is anyone in the area?

Yeah, what he said. :D
Hi guys,
Is that a paved trail all the way? Just wondering

I understand it's mostly crushed limestone.
I understand it's mostly crushed limestone.
Crushed limestone from Mckeesport to Cumberland, MD, and from there to DC on the gravel and dirt towpath. There are occasional paved portions when the trail passes through towns.
I'm a road rider that is why I asked, always looking for nice paved trails to ride. Have fun men!!!!
Neils,
I had to share what made me laugh when I first saw the title.
I am riding the Tour de Cure (actually a couple of them) and one is proposing special jerseys for the diabetics in the ride... As I thought of that in the context of a group ride for epilepsy, I thought you wouldn't even need special jerseys, just ride in front of everybody with a Cateye LD-1000 (or equally bright LED) in random flash mode.
Anyway, the thought of it makes me laugh, even though I know that it is not a funny disease. I did just make a small contribution, that I hope makes up for my sick sense of humor...
Good luck on the ride!
Any specific dates yet?

We're planning on May 31st - June 8th. Don't worry about epilepsy jokes, I have a thick skin.

Don't feel bad. When I purchased my flashing helmet light, I used to bug Neil F. with it, not realizing that probably wasn't a good idea.

The dude's amazing. He's raised 370 dollars in a little more than three days.
.... my sick sense of humor...
On that note, I did suggest we call the tour "Shake, Rattle, and Roll." :D

Thank you!

Neil F. continues to amaze me. He's raised 590 dollars in less than two weeks. And the following item from his fundraising page inspires as well:
"... a car is not a necessity. For years, I resisted changing my epilepsy medications to one of the newer, better drugs because I was afraid of not being able to drive. It's very obvious that bicycling my commute is far, far healthier than sitting in a bucket seat for half an hour, but I had been resisting the idea."

And now he's reached 811 dollars. Incredible.
(Bump.)
Less than 2 weeks to go until the Pittsburgh to DC ride starts!
A big thank you to everyone who's been so generous! I've raised over $800
for epilepsy research. (My donations page only reflects the total from web donations,
not checks. The web folks at the society have been terrible about getting back to
my repeated requests to fix this. They need to get their act together. But I digress...)
As some of you may already know, I was involved in a car/ bicycle accident a few
days ago. I'm fine, but my bike was destroyed.
Fortunately, I was able to replace the bike, although it was a close thing. I received
five offers of loaner bikes from bikeforums people in case I couldn't get
a bike on time. You folks are awesome!
If you had intended to donate but hadn't, now's the time! You can donate
on the web, or mail me a check made out the Epilepsy Foundation. Here's the
link to the donations page:

Thanks again and have a great summer!
I'll be hitting there soon.....my wife has epilepsy....I wish you all the best of luck....maybe we could coordinate something thousands of miles away!
I reached my $1k goal! Thanks, everybody.
