Foo - walk 10 minutes in lightening, ride 5 minutes in lightening, or don't go to class?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Call a friend/cab? Campus shuttle bus?

I'd walk or ride. Assuming you're not riding over the top of a completely barren hill or otherwise the tallest object in the area, the chances of being struck are very low. Besides, the electrical storm is probably just "in the area", as opposed to "directly overhead". You're more likely to get hit with a winning lottery ticket! :p

Ride if you've got a carbon fiber bike, walk if you've got a steel bike. :p

walk if you've got a steel bike. :pPfft, just wear a rubber hat. Between that and the tires, you're completely electricity-proof!

I believe carbon fiber conducts electricity (http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138731).

I believe carbon fiber conducts electricity.

If you get hit by lightning on a CF bike, the bike will explode, probably in the yield range of 3 -5 kilotons, depending on the weave of the fiber and if the fork has a cf or aluminum steerer.

Ok, change it to ride if you've got AllenG's bamboo bike, walk otherwise. ;)

If you get hit by lightning on a CF bike, the bike will explodeThey do that anyway, lightning or not.

The lightning will just cause it to melt as it explodes, sending shrapnel of liquid-hot plastic everywhere, as well as confetti of fibrous material.

Now I think I'd vote for riding with my worst enemies in the lightning so I can take them out with me.*

*No, I don't really have any enemies.

Sure they do, but you have to hit a pebble or ride over a playing card, or something really harsh. They seldom just explode on their own. I am just saying that a lightening strike will trigger the inevitable explosion instantly.

They seldom just explode on their own.Oh, they do. One time, I was just sitting there (as I often do), and a carbon fiber bike randomly exploded!

Not, you know, anywhere near me or anything, but I bet it happened!

Geez, if I weren't already paranoid enough about buying a carbon fiber bike. I feel like I have to baby it compared to my steel bikes.

Edit: grammar fix.

You're a carbon-fiber lifeform, are you not? Surely you explode on a regular basis. You should be used to it by now, no?

Steel explodes too, just really slowly, and in a controlled "rusty" sort of way.

Aluminum just get dents that renders it useless if you tap it with a feather or breathe on it really hard.

No matter what material you choose for your new bike, you are doomed.

You might as well walk to class in lightening.

No, over the eons we evolved a weave that does not explode (duh, natural selection), you humans just haven't discovered it yet.

This is why I will never use a carbon fiber seatpost or saddle.

Aluminum just get dents that renders it useless if you tap it with a feather or breathe on it really hard. Not only that, but instead of flexing, it snaps and kills you.

Moral of the story: Bikes are dangerous.

Blowing your customers up real good pretty much renders them useless as repeat buyers. just saying.

Not that it is not good fun on a Saturday night.

why would you pile bits of blowed up customers onto wheelchairs? And if you can find the bits, you are doing something wrong in the construction of your CF bikes. A properly built CF bike should explode with enough force to vaporize the rider.

is new CF with less power. Only maims them so we can sell a wheelchair to them....now the wheelchair is big enough to take out the passenger and maim the pusher so that we can sell a new wheelchair...is like Microsoft product. :p

Pfft, just wear a rubber hat. Between that and the tires, you're completely electricity-proof!That is a bunch of nonsense. I know this is a light-hearted thread, but do not believe this, it is dangerous. The rubber in tires or a hat will not protect you from lightning. The metal car is what protects you from lightning. The car is a Faraday cage.

Yeah, besides everyone knows it's the tinfoil hat grounding you that prevents light(e)ning strikes.

SweetLou

You might have been joking, but I do not want anyone believing that rubber tires, shoe soles or anything of the such is all that is needed to protect oneself from lightning. A lot of people believe the rubber tires in cars is what protects them. I would hate to find out that a joke led to someone believing they will be fine on a bike in a lightning storm, especially if that person is the highest point around. You might believe it is a joke, but it is a very dangerous joke.

Yes, ride around for a while on a steel bike while holding a big fishing or pool cleaning pole and if you don't die just go back home and watch a movie.
