I need advise on where to get some cranks for under $100. what would look good on this bike?

my freewheel is a 18 tooth. I'm looking for around 50 tooth cranks.

since this is a conversion i would recomend going to you local co-op or used shop and picking up a newish set of road double. shouldnt run you more than twenty bucks or so.

Huh? What's wrong with the one's you've got? Just take off the extraneous chainring and you're good to go! Looks like that bigger one it 50 or 52t.

^ you can't separate that style crankset, despite it's faux "bolts"

i agree that you should just find a nice double road crank and then get SS chainring bolts and take off one of the rings. the outer ring on a double is usually about a 52t

get an alien crankset from alienbikes.com for less than 100 bucks. you can buy their bottom bracket that matches, too.

yeah, they are fake bolts...
I don't like the look of the extra metal on the chainring either. (the outer chainguard thing ) I was looking on Ebay for some nice new cranks but I should just get some used ones? I'll have to go to the LBS anyways to get a longer chain.
thanks!

yeah go with a used road double that lets you remove the rings. if you don't have a bike co-op, check bike shop parts bins and post on craigslist. You are looking for a "square taper road double". Also, post in the trade threads or marketplace wanted section. Somebody here probably has something kicking around.

+1

They work great and look great. I actually put these on my Schwinn conversion.

I would just go with an old Shimano 600 or Sakae Racing (SR) crankset. Both can be found in the sub $20 range and will last a lifetime.

when you guys use an old double, does the proper chain line require you to use the inner side of spider?

If you flip the spindle on the old BB, it brings the chainring closer to the stay and helps with chainline issues. I've never used the inside of the spider and never had issues with chainline.
