I have a Dura-Ace sprocket and lock ring and I wondered if anyone can help me figure out how they have been plated. You can see from the pictures that they are coated in some kind of special golden material. I don't think it is titanium nitride like the EAI Gold Medal cog. I thought it may be just nickel coated / electro plated but is that possible in gold colour? I am also not sure if the coating functions to reduce friction or if it is just for show? Anyone who is knowledgeable about these things - I appreciate your help.

Aren't these made by board favorite Tomity?

I have seen the one on Tomity's website. His are polished silver and not gold plated.

And I agree, it is a bit of NJS uber bling...

Tomity is here!!

This is not cog that I processed.
As for this cog, polish is not done.
My Tomity polished cog is nickel plate finish.
I made 18K gold plating special cogs for Athens olympic games double gold medalist Mr.Ryan Bayley. It was a present of commemoration to him.

Hi Tomity
Glad to make your acquaintance. Thanks for explaining that. I don't think my cog is real gold, I am still wondering how it was done.

I dabble in machining and fabrication...from my experience:
It could be a brass electroplate. It's just for looks, there's been no polishing done and technically it is no longer NJS as they have strict color regulations...hence NONE of the color anodized Sugino/Nitto stuff is TRUE NJS anymore. Only black, silver and the champagne colors are technically NJS for ano'd parts. It's okay looking but certainly NOT the quality of the polished and plated cogs available.

really? Wow...sorry. I thought it still was...Hmmm...maybe because of all the other colors...black is too easy to fake? (Not factory?) I know it was...that's why there were runs of black 75's. Sorry for the misinformation.

All I know is when my friend ordered black 75s they cam with no stamp.

I was an electroplater from '98 to '03 and I saw tons of parts like this. Chances are good that (if they went with the most economical) it's zinc plating with a cheap layer of "yellow". While this would suffice, I'm hoping this isn't the case. Brass is definitely a better quality plating alternative. It's hard to tell from the picture which it is, but let's hope it's brass at least.

cogs aren't ano'd...they're iron oxided...blackened chemically...the ano'd black aluminum parts were what what was in question.

Looks like the ones they sell at Cycle Land(?) in Chiba. This shop sells chrome and gold DA cogs and lockrings.

I'm pretty sure that he was joking. At least I hope so.

OK, seems like it could be brass electroplate then. I knew they were no longer suitable for Keirin but they do look great up close. Thanks for the comments.
