I am planning on commuting from my place in San Marcos to my work in Chula Vista this Friday and then returning to San Marcos Saturday morning. My biggest "get lost - don't know what route" area is transitioning from Downtown/Point Loma to PCH. The route I take from San Marcos shoots down Rancho Sante Fe to PCH down to La Jolla, take Genessee all the way down to Linda Vista and shoot through USD. From here, it seems a little difficult since I had to take a bunch of wierd ways. I took Nimitz down to Rosecrans somehow then shot down Harbor to National City (once I hit Downtown I am okay at this point). Does anyone else have a suggestion to take from Mission Valley into the Downtown area? Thanks a bunch!

here is the route I'd take, get to LaJolla, Gilman ends at the railroad tracks, there is a bike trail to Moreno Blvd, you can take that all the way to Friars then through old town to Down town

Have you ridden this? The map doesn't appear to be correct. Gilman doesn't end at the tracks, but rather turns into La Jolla Colony Drive when it goes under the 5. You can pick up the Rose Creek Bike Path just east of the 5, right at the south-east corner. I don't know of a way to get up to Morena.
My Thursday commute (Chula Vista to Sorrento Valley) goes up the bike path, and then makes a right on La Jolla Colony. I hook up with Regents, Genesse, the 5, and then down into Sorrento Valley.
For the OP, I'd suggest heading down Gilman, as the map shows, then heading down the bike path, which dumps you on Santa Fe. This bike path is on the 5 (west) side of the tracks, not the other side. From there:
- continue on Sante Fe
- make a right on Damon
- make a left on Mission Bay Drive
- just before the ramp to 5 south make that right/left to get on N Mission Bay Drive heading south
- near the bottom of Mission Bay, when crossing Sea World Dr, the road changes to Pacific Highway
From there it is a straight shot to downtown. Be careful of the intersection where Barnett Ave comes in. They send you down an underpass, and when you come up you are in the middle of four lanes, two of which are coming in from the right with short sight distances. Normally I just make a right on Enterprise, a left on Jessop, and then a left on Barnett to avoid the merge. People are coming up to speed anticipating getting on the 5 south.
I have been down this way a million times. Let me know if you need any other advice on the route.

^^^^ that is the route we did for the amtrak century I believe. You were right, the Rose Canyon Bike trail spits on on Santa Fe rather then Moreno Blvd, Moreno is on block east.
