Anyone riding in the PlanetUltra Solvang Spring Double this month?
There is a nice little group from the SFVBC that is doing this.
Think so, know more later this week..
Yes, I'll be there. It will be my fourth Solvang Spring if I'm remembering right.
Once drafting a tandem, 2004
Once in the rain and wind, 2005
Once practically perfect in every way, 2006
Hopefully it will be more like that perfect one again!
Yeah, I missed it last year . . . medical issues.
Rick / OCRR
I'll be there providing SAG support.
not this year....other than it being freeing till the sun came out, the weather last year was perfect...
I'm signed up and ready to go.
I'll be there as well with a couple other guys from the AV.
I will be there. It's my first double. Thanks scvroadie (http://www.bikeforums.net/member.php?u=45882) for providing SAG support!
When are you starting? I'll be at the 5:00 AM start since I know I won't finish in under 14 hours.

I'm starting at 6:30, see you on the road.
I will be starting at 6:30 as well. I have a generic carbon bike with a Leopard decal on it. Hope to see you there!
Ok, I'm totally in now....
I better start training:D
7:30 start, I'm the dude on the white carbon bike.

Hey Jon, keep an eye out for Keith.
Hey Jon, keep an eye out for Keith.
You mean like.. make sure he doesn't fall. ;) He'll probably drop my group on the first climb with one arm tied behind his back. It would be cool if he could hang with us, my group is old but they can sure ride.
Not sure what time I will be starting Rick. I am riding with a few others that have done many more doubles than I have, including Solvang. I will be following their lead.
I am riding a silver and black carbon Lemond wearing a Hammer jersey.
What's everyone doing for dinner Friday night?
Hey Jon, keep an eye out for Keith.
 He's riding this!!!!!
OMG that man is either incredibly tough or a masochist....or both. :p
I expect ride reports people!!!! :D
Hey Brandy, are you doing this ride?
Count down is on. People better be carbo loading. :D

ME...Miss seeing you here. Well, I'm going out for a little ride then be at registration at 6. After that, find some food. The wind is really blowing right now, hopefully we won't have a headwind tomorrow.:(
just not at the little mermaid....

Wow...memories. :o
You, Bill, John, Joel and me at that LM having dinner. Carbo loading with the manly-men....and Joel. :D
zing!
Well, hell, he zings me all the time and not in the pleasurable way that requires showering after.
Remind me where I shouldn't go tomorrow night after the double?
exactly.......we went to a pretty good place back in buellton....some brewhouse type thing, hell if i can remember...twas good!!! over near a Marriott i think
Could that Firestone brewery?
The line is wicked long. I hope they work fast.
Great ride yesterday. This was my first double. Incident free ride which is always a plus. The only mechanical was from my riding partner. For some reason he didn't install the cleats he purchased on Friday and at the lunch stop his right shoe stopped clipping in. The rest of the ride his right foot was unclipped. Being the trooper he is he finished without complaint or incident.
Total time was 13 hr. 10 min., we started at 6:30 AM and finished at 7:40 PM. Considering this was my first double I was pleased with this time. I hadn't done very much training for the event. My last long ride was a century in December. For about 3 weeks I did 2 to 3 20 mile ride around the Pasadena hills west of the Rose Bowl a week and last weekend from the 2 from the 210 to Newcombs Ranch. Other than that I didn't do too much.
My next scheduled double is the Grand Tour Lowlands Double and hope to get into the Death Valley Double. Triple Crown here I come. I want that damn jersey. :)
BTW I listened to most of a lectured titled Six Months That Changed the World: The Treaty of Versailles and World War II, which is part of the Portable Professor series through Audible. Very interesting subject for those interested in history and the history behind many current events in Southwest Asia (Middle East) and Eastern Europe. Amazing how the decisions of a few men in 1919 are still impacting our world today.
Awesome!!! Good job! :) Any pics?
13:10 ... damn, that's fast. I think I did it in 16 hours.
Scoot, are we there yet?
Awesome!!! Good job! :) Any pics?
No pics, sorry. I tend not to take my camera on road rides. I guess I don't stop to smell the flowers very much on the road.
Finally time to post a report, short post. It was an uneventful ride for me and not much to report, I guess that’s good. I felt good all day. The weather wasn’t much of an issue all day except for headwind from SLO to Morro Bay and crosswinds into Guadalupe, normal for this ride. It stayed cloudy and cool most of the day, a little sunshine every once in awhile. The wildflowers were out, sorry no pictures (where’s ME when you need her).
My total time was 12:14, that’s 46 minutes fast than I’ve ever done Solvang before. I took 10 minutes off my bike time with an 11:09. Next weekend Hemet.
It was fairly uneventful for me as well. I lost the really fast pack after 82 miles. I latched on to another group and wheelsucked my way to a 9:50 total time. I basically just held on for dear life. I was too cooked after the first 100 miles to do much work at the front although I did try. I had to pull away on the climbs so I wouldn't get dropped on the descents. It must be a mental thing keeping me from putting out as much power on the flats as I can on climbs. Because I am way too fat to be outclimbing any body.
Drum Canyon should be left out. The climb wasn't bad but I my hands and legs went numb on the descent. That road was about the roughest I've ever been on.
I was going to head out for a ride today but my left knee is killing me. I've never had any pain before this and it feels like it's right on the kneecap so I'll guess I'll just head out for a walk instead.
Edit: I had enough trouble staying in the group so no pictures from me either.

We all hate you.
We all hate you.
I totally didn't deserve that time for for the amount of time I spent at the back of the group I was with but I guess I'll have to deal with my own guilty conscience.
And I hate the guy who finished in 9:04 ;)
Wow entropy, 9:50. That is really impressive.

Don't go do eastern Sierra then - the expansion joints are even worse. :)

Anyone have any news or information on the cyclist hit during the ride? I heard someone was hit from behind and was conscious but not moving after the incident. My pairs go out to the rider.
Hi MTBMaven,
A friend of mine was in a Planet Ultra SAG van at the scene and his report is that the victim was "conscious but not moving" knowingly, i.e. he knew not to move after a hit like that. My friend is not in the medical field, but in his opinion, the cyclist was not badly hurt.
It could have been a lot worse, for sure, and apparently the higway patrol officer was not believing the motorists version of what happened. The cyclist was taken away in an ambulance, his bike had a completely ruined rear wheel and one of the chainstays was (according to my friend) totally separated from the rest of the frame.
This is as I remember it, and as told to me after the SAG driver had finished his job for the day.
Rick / OCRR
Oh, that sucks major. Not to go on the negative, but I do hope that rider is okay and I hate to hear someone was hit. Well, that is the risk we all take, for sure.
I hope he/she heals quickly!
True M.E.
We all take those risks, and fortunately, the vast majority of times no one is hurt. Still, we all know there is that chance.
Otherwise, full Solvang Double report to follow as soon as I've finished it. I rode with your old buddies from ADO; Roland, Ron and Clem for about the first 150 miles, then rode with Terri Boykins for the last 50 (or not quite).
Terri was flyin' like I've never seen her fly, and was quite inspirational to watch. Don't know if she's a member of this forum, but I'll try to remember to ask her when I see her on the Eastern Sierra Double.
Rick / OCRR
Ohh...I hope the ADO gang had a blast like you did, Rick! :) Congrats to Terry!
Rick, thanks for the information. Glad to hear the rider was not in as bad a condition as originally reported. Nonetheless a bad scene for sure. I hope the individual has a speedy recovery and gets a shinny new bike out of the ordeal.
