What is the use of the franchise player policy in the National Football League?

The Atlanta Falcons wanted to make their good QB, Jeff George(excellent arm), a franchise player, but it turned out he yelled at the coach on tv!

The player was traded, and the coach was fired later. He (June Jones, the coach) went to Hawaii where the run and shoot proved more applicable to that team's circumstances, and George went to the Raiders or something(I forget).

Now, the Falcons QB and franchise player Michael Vick has a broken leg situation and isn't playing. So, what is the point of having an injured franchise? There is already in the NFL a franchise owner, coach, etc., and isn't football a team sport too?

To me, making player roles more different than they have to be is like having a cable guy for your tv antenna!

the franchise player doesn't have to be the best player on the team. this rule was invented to prevent the team's identity lost to free agency. labeling someone a franchise player means that they are restricted in their free agency - but that the player must be paid an avg of what the top 5 players at that position is making.

it gives a team like the falcon leverage when bargaining with that particular player. so if a team like the falcon has one thing going for it during its rebuilding, that star player just can't up and leave....because he is the franchise.

Then my franchise broke his leg in a preseason game which really didn't matter all that much; now there is talk of making my franchise compete in a game late in the season to enthuse fans but not on the other hand get better draft picks for next year.
