The Ford Excursion (aka The Valdez)

The reports of its death are premature (http://www.freep.com/money/autonews/ford28_20031028.htm)

Ford expects to make between 10M and 20M dollars from the sales of this vehicle (1,000-2,000 units/month @ $10,000 profit each). It is just too popular and profitable to be allowed to fade away.

These things are being sold at a rate of 1 or 2 each hour. If you took all the Excursions sold this year and lined them up bumper to bumper (as they are often found on the freeway), the line would extend for 64 miles.

My favorite quote:

"The danger is that today they want to do away with big SUVs," Lyons told Ward's. "Tomorrow will it be big houses?"

Judging by the popularity of this product, I don't think Big SUVs, Big Profits, or Big Multinational Corporations are in much danger, regardless of what Steve Lyons would like us to believe.

The Ford excursion is the biggest waste of metal on the road today unless you are hauling a work crew of 8 along with a tractor or heavy equipment behind it in tow.

People who buy this vehicle are not thinking reasonably but that they just want the biggest and baddest SUV to show up everyone else. They really show how ignorant and wasteful they are. Especially considering I see dozens of them driving down the road with a petite little 120 lb woman behind the wheel and no passengers.

The men driving them obviously have such a shortage of self esteem they must drive a schoolbus to seem like badasses. The evidence of this is in the driving habits you see that go with the drivers of these behemoths.

Someone i know bought a used excursion last year for 29,000 dollars, he thinks its a freaking Lexus, he wont drive it to work and only drives it on the weekend, he has no boat, he's not a contractor, he must just have a really small penis ( based on the fact he talkes about nothing else. It is embarissingly large, he thinks it's cool. you can park it anywhere, it has leather seats so you freeze your ass off all the time, these things are a complete waste of money.

A$$hole, my My BMW 330 cost more, looks nicer, and doesnt get 6 mpg. You even sound like him with the " sound system is balls". do you have to pay for 2 lots at your trailer park because your truck is bigger than your trailer. And 15,000 miles per year my ass, you are an *******, and it is a penis thing, You know it maintenance man.

If ya don't own one, ya don't know what you're talkin about. I ride my bike over 15,000 miles per year. I drive an excursion, it's by far the nicest riding, most usefull vehicle ever made. I carry 5 That's 5 bikes, 5 riders, 5 bags of gear 2 coolers all inside with the doors shut to events every weekend. Let me see ya do that in your justy. the bikes stay dry, the riders stay comfortable and the sound system is the balls. You're full of crap with the penis thing and I bet you couldn't afford an excursion if ya wanted one. I also bet ya don't come close to the 15,000 miles per year on your bike either.

HMMM, 1200 miles per month of riding if you ride year around. Are you a pro? It does sound like you actually haul enough stuff to justify it if you are not lying through your teeth.

I owned an F350 super duty for my business and the excursion is pretty much the same frame/chassis but with the ***** little creature comforts that the wussy little neo-men and girly girls like. I got rid of the BIG truck due to the insane expense of fuel and upkeep that it required. I had it in the Ford shop 5 times over the one year I had it for stupid poorly engineered bull$hit.

Yup, i'd get djbowens BMW any day over a school bus (excursion) unless I actually started a school. For now I am a Toyota and Jeep man. The toyota will last three times as long as that poorly built Ford I had and the jeep is just for fun.

my friend (snip) he must just have a really small penis. (SNIP) you freeze your ass off all the time, these things are a complete waste of money.
So do you talk about your friends behind thier backs on the internet all the time? Because in one fell swoop, you've labeled your friend as having bad judgement, a small penis, a cold ass, and a money waster. Perhaps he does have bad judgement, not only in vehicles, but in choices of friends as well.

I bet you couldn't afford an excursion if ya wanted one.

Any swinging pecker with a job can walk into a car dealership these days and drive out in almost any vehicle they want. Driving overpriced vehicles means you are either stupid enough to sign into one of those 6 year financing deals or you actually make a decent living. It is no longer a measure of sucess, but more aptly a measure of stupidity depending on ones financial situation. I've seen 50'000 dollar cars parked in driveways of 50'000 dollar homes. Go figure. Buying a car is so damn easy now it is pathetic.

Wow, this is starting to sound like the Cycling+ forum. I love it when the Brits get into it with each other!!!! They just sound more educated when they do it.

Excursions, Hummers, Suburbans, etc... They are all in the same category. If you haul around a family of 6 or pull a motor home then it might be justified but most are just used for grocery getters and mall shuttles.

As it is a free country, you can get what you want if you have the credit or cash. It is annoying to see some Joe cruising along in a huge truck with no trailer hitch on the back and nothing inside or passing a sports car in the parking lot and the tires haven't even been scrubbed to the edge. Not everyone uses a vehicle for its intended purpose, or maybe the car makers intend their products to be an extension of personality rather then functionality.
After watching numerous people display their driving incompetence while backing an SUV out of a parking space, maybe they should require a special test and endorsement like a motorcycle.

It never fails to amaze me the people that B & M about someone choice of vehicle. Is it jealousy, is it shear supidity? I could really give a rats behind what someone else drives - I am not paying for it (in terms of vehicle purchase or expense). I am sure someone will dispute that fact I don't pay for it, but you know what you live your life your way and let others live their's their way.

Half the problem with society today is people trying to push their beliefs on others. No wonder we passed the point of just having a set of basic laws to now having laws for all those that want their special interests protected.

and a half a million dollar home these days is nothing to brag about, it's called a starter home here.

I know of Homes on Long island that are worth XXXXXX because of location not because it is fancy or even remotely nice. Many of these .5 to .75 million dollar homes resemble section 8 government housing around here.

Ultimately a persons worth is not in the amount of cash or the posessions thewy have but in their quality of life. You can have everything and still have a crappy life that you hate or complain about all the time. Some people use material goods to compensate for feelings of worthlessnes as a person.

I hope that is not the case with anyone here.

I think I will trade my Toyota in on a Kenworth this week. Lots of hauling capacity and a sleeper behind the cab sounds nice. ;)

i want this to sound nice, you have no idea what your talking about. homes in towns like hempstead, wyandanch, unuindale, etc are all worth nothing and those are the towns with all governement assistance, the north shore is BIG $$$ the South shore is BIG$$ the closer the center of the island the cheaper it gets. the more east you go the more land you get. there are no homes like you speak of.

Hey cool off a bit, I'm on your side. I am refering to homes where the land is worth xxxxx but there is an old house that is worth xx but these folks like to claim they are in high dollar living quarters. Sorry if it came across wrong. I use LI as example since most folks I know think LI is nothing but multi million dollar castles.

My main problem with SUV's is that they scare the crap out of me when I ride. If you get hit by a car chances are you get thrown over and will most likely live. SUV's and Pickemups will likely go over you ensuring almost certain death. The environmental arguement should be rendered nil soon as emissions regs for trucks will eventually be made the same as cars. As far as Co2 emmisions go, I truely belive that owners of large trucks will be sorry about their "investment" in the next 5 years as oil prices continue to climb.

To the defense of SUV's, if sales of these things to people who don't actually *need* them continue to finance projects like the Ford GT I guess that's OK! Oooooohhhh, that is one HOT car.
