Road Cycling - Hanging your bike...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Is there a proper way to hang a bike?
I currently hang mine upside down from the wheels on rubber coated hooks.
Will this do any damage? Any better suggestions?
Thanks,

I've seen some hangers that use a hook and use only the front wheel. Do you think this can damage the wheel?

Hey Homestar-
Hanging from only the front wheel is fine too.
The renowned Jobst Brandt once replied to such a question that "over time"
the wheels of a bike so suspended would become ovalized and there was a
risk the rims would dent. He also IIRC opined that double butted tubes were
at risk of becoming single butted. All of this was from the gravitational pull
on the bike. He is a well known ascerbic however..... :D

Sch only thing I woudl say about being ovalized would be if you left the bike up there for a LONG time, or you have EXTREMELY bad luck to always hang between the same two spokes every time. Otherwise you woudl have to figure the weight would be in different areas at different times so no chance really being ovalized. I think my fatt butt puts more weight on the wheel them my full bike pulling down on it from the hanging it.
please remember that these are spoke wheels.
almost equal tension is applied on all the points on the wheel(where spokes are attached), no matter where the pressure point on the wheel is.

Over time, depending on the quality of the hooks, the rubber on the hooks can wear off (on top, where you can't see it) and can scratch the rim. This is especially true with rims that have right angles, such as MB rims.
If you're concerned about hanging the bike from the front wheel then consider hanging it up using brackets that support the frame. I built my own using wood, but they're also available online.

But wouldn't that make your top tube sag? :D

I thought that's where hockey stick tape comes in to insulate insulate the hooks, eh? :)

Only if its made of AL ;)

I've been hanging bikes for close to half a century in any which way imaginable.
Jobst is a well known curmudgeon who haunts rec.bicycle.tech and is the
author of a well thought of text on wheel building. He does not suffer fools
gladly and is a master of the rapier flame. His reply was in this mode. The flow
rate of metal in this circumstance is may be related more to the evaporation
rate of the metal at higher altitudes with subsequent redeposition of the vapor
below. Local magnetic fields would alter this for some frame and wheel
materials. steve

Me too,not a half century but close. If your rims ovalize from hanging them on the wall you have 2 options, buy a lighter bike, or buy better wheel sets. The weight of a bike should not do any damage to your rims.

Isn't the weight on the wheels the same hanging as it would be sitting on the floor?

It could also be the same as, like me, putting 200# worth of butt on it :D
