Well, first and foremost yours truly is an idiot and didn't know that he had a suzue not a surly.

( http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=36592 for reference ).

On the suzue hub, the durace track cog is spaced out to far, and doesn't let the lock ring get a complete bite on hub. The bike shop guy didn't notice this, but I don't blame him, as I did, and didn't say squat. So in looking it over, we realized that it couldn't get a bite. I dumped the durace hub, got a BMX cog, and spent $ on a new chain to fit the BMX cog.

Now I've had similar problems again with the cog slipping, mainly at the near stop point and at track stand spots. LBS guy said to not stop hard, and to do a whole bunch of hard starts over the next week to really get the cog on, and then come see him.. and we'd go from there.

He didn't charge me for the new cog (swapped for the durace) but I had to get a new lock ring.. and a chain. 30 bucks worth.

I'm thinking if this doesn't work my options are:

Braze the @#$@#$ thing on and call it done.

Or spend some REAL cash and get a decent hub that will survive me.

Opinions? Info?

First make a chain whip with 1/8 chain, then put the cog on with some loctite and use the whip to crank that bugger down. Do the same with the lockring using a trusty Hozan spanner and it shouldn't move.
You would need a steel hub to braze the cog on.

I have a Suzue Promax hub and a Dura Ace cog and lockring.

No problems.

I don't do alot of leg locks, but I do not have any brakes either.

I might add, the sub11 marked cogs I have are of much better quality than the current Surly marked cogs, although I know they are the same now.

What I can tell you is that the durace cog I had was spaced toooo far out. The lock ring didn't get a complete grip.

The ring, as pictured here, is much larger on the dura ace cog. This caused it to sit past the shoulder meant for the cog. With this, it prevented the lock ring from sitting completely on, and it "hung off" so to speak.

I have a wheelset built on Suzue wheels, I had no problems with teh cog sitting out to far on the hub so the lockring could not get a good grip. What about getting a sander/file whatever and making the cog a bit thinner, I'm assumign you would only be taking off very little so should not weaken the cog.

To late, I dumped the cog. I thought about it, but I'd have to play with the threads.

The three brands of track cogs I've had absolutely no compatibility problems or otherwise are: Original Sub11's......EAI cogs......& Suntour cogs. They all have identical shoulder widths. I use them with either Campy or DuraAce lockrings.... again, absolutely no problems.

Perhaps the combo of suzue, dura ace, and surly (hub, cog, and lock ring respectively) did it in.

Or.. who cares. This may work (though I couldn't ride sunday or monday due to smoke around the area which I live)... and it's all a mute point then..
