Road Cycling - Question about 2001 105 crank.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Now back to the question. I bought my wife a bike with 2001 105 group at a closeout price. I have read that the group is great except for problems with the crank. Shimano fixed the "problem" in 2002. What exactly is the problem? Should I be worried about it since it is my wifes first road bike?
I posted this in the mechanical section but will probable get more response here. If there is a problem with double posting will a mod please remove one?

i had problems with mine. the splining stripped out (something about steel bb vs. aluminum cranks=bad). had to replace the whole damn thing. BUT, it turned out that the original shop who put it together didn't quite line up the splining, and just jammed it on there, causing the problem. i haven't had any problems since it was replaced, and i never went back to the original shop.
