Mountain Biking - Shoes for Eggbeaters

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Maybe someone could help me out with this. I've finally decided to go clipless and as a birthday gift got some eggbeater pedals for my bike. I'm off to buy some shoes for them this week. Any recommendations? Thanks.

there are way to many shoe options to choose from, the fact that you will be using eggbeaters and opposed to any other clipless pedals doesnt really matter too much. buy the best shoes you can afford to, the Sidi shoes are very nice and Pearl Izumi makes some decent ones too.

Most shoes will be compatible with the cleat used for eggbeaters as it's relatively small. Just make sure before you buy. If the shoes says it's SPD compatible, you're Golden!
A good quality and reasonably priced shoes are those by Specialized. I was at the Specialized website and they've got '03 shoes at a pretty good price.

I've heard from people with Eggbeaters that because of the very small contact surface you need shoes with very hard soles. Might want to keep that in mind when you are shopping around.
Thanks guys. I've started looking at the Sidi's and Specialized. They look pretty good. Anyway, I guess I'm asking the question because, with a pedal that doesn't have a platform, I've heard a stiffer shoe works a lot better. I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good shoe to use in combination with the eggbeaters.
The Specialized Mtn Sport, Comp and Pro lines all work well with the Egg Beaters. Thos are the only ones I have tried but they are very comfortable, easy to walk in and have stiff soles so they had everything I looked for. I bought mine off ebay. They had been worn once and cost me 1/2 retail.
Thanks Trey. I'll look into them. I'm hitting Performance tonight and I'll check out Ebay tomorrow.

I have a set of Eggbeaters and love them, Hate the fact that a few months after I purchased they offered the candy line... I could use the platform for the short rides to the store...
Anyhow I have a pair of Cannondale shoes, they have a relatively SOFT soul to them, however I haven't noticed any real lose of pedal power or anything.
Just my .02$

About any spd compatible shoe would work.
Worst case, you may need to trim a bit of the sole to make clipping in and out easier-I've had to do this on a pair of Gaernes and on my Specialized Pros. Northwaves did not have this issue. The shim they ship with newer models may make this a moot point, however.
Hey everyone. Just wanted to say thanks for all the input. I went out last night and got myself a pair of Shimano M152's at Performance. They're nice and stiff and feel great on. And, I got them for under $80. Thanks again.
I would say that teh better shoes touse with eggbeaters are the Northwave Iguana and Shimano M221. Both have hard cleat fitting areas and very stiff shoes. This will make using the eggbeaters more tolerable.
I tried them with my old NW Team MTBs and after an hour or so I could start to feel the engagement bars through the sole of my shoes.
I now use M221's & tried the EB's again and now I would consider them if i had to buy new pedals.

Off,
Performance bike has last years Sidi Dominator 4 on sale for $159. Colorado Cyclist has the Dominator 4 SRS (replaceable sole) for $145, sizes are limited. I always try to buy at the LBS but you can't argue with a $50 savings.
Cheers.

I would've suggested Sidi's too, but you're all set.
