Hey all, I've got a question. How often do you stop for a break/rest (1-2 minutes) when riding? By that I mean do you stop every hour, 2 hours, etc? OR do you never stop? ;)
Thanks,
Chris

I'm glad BF is back up, I was having withdrawls!

I stop around every 30 miles depending on the ride and whom I'm riding with. I've ridden 65 - 70 miles with only one stop (very little climbing). But then I've ridden Baldy and stopped three times. I prefer stops under 10 minutes, but I'm social so time gets away from me sometimes. I always stop for llamas. :D

I don't get Nickolodeon, but if I did, probably. I like to see them in real life actually. They are fascinating animals.

I stop about every 30 miles. That changes some if it is HOT out or a lot of climbing or not is involved. On some organized rides (Palm Springs, Cool Breeze) I blow off the first rest stop. They are too crowded and I am not ready to stop. Except for the lunch stop I make all my stops short, not more than 5 minutes. I never pancake so I stop. (Full zipper jerseys rule!)

What is "rest"?

As Dory would say, "just keep swimming..., just keep swimming..."

It's all a question of effort. You stop to rest when you think you need it. I take a 50 mile 3 hour Wed ride with no breaks because all the street lights are my "rest" stops.

Like MarkAJ says it depends on the terrain and weather as well and when you do stop for a rest don't dawdle! 5-10 min tops. Keep those legs warm, if they cool down the lactose builds up and then your in pain.

Typically if you are doing a long distance event ride like a metric or full century its every 20 miles or so. That doesn't mean you take off your shoes and sit for an hour. It means you stop, take a posture break, maybe get a quick bite and then be off. I typically allow not more than 10 minutes for rest stops.

If you are doing 20 - 30 miles you probably don't ever need to stop (other than for safety). If doing 40 - 50 miles, then split up the ride. Anything over that see above.

Bottom line you need to listen to your body and if it needs to stop, stop. If you need to fuel, fuel. Keep riding and eventually you will know how your body reacts to riding time etc. I can usually ride 30 miles without a stop but after that I get hungry. It's probably better for me to fuel at 20 miles and allow my system to absorb the fuel then to try and get something into me after 30 and struggle with bonking. I struggle with foot problem and its like clockwork at 30 miles my left foot starts to ache. I know to stop, rest my foot for a short time and then I can go on. Again, your body will tell you what's proper.

Hey all, I've got a question. How often do you stop for a break/rest (1-2 minutes) when riding? By that I mean do you stop every hour, 2 hours, etc? OR do you never stop? ;)When I'm riding by myself (up to 50 miles), I normally don't stop for rests except due to traffic signs. Water/gel via gel flask while riding on the bike, or if I'm really tired, delayed start after the next traffic light while taking a few more sips of water.

I don't seem to have a problem with restroom breaks; though it's probably because I don't have proper hydration/electrolyte balance. :p For those of you that rides solo on longer distances, how do you manage the logistics of a restroom break? Do you leave the bike out at the front door of 7-11/Starbucks/etc., then walk in (potential line-ups)? I've only done this on group rides and often wonder how safe this is (solo). Thanks!

I take my bike with me into the store and park it close to or inside the restroom if possible. I've never had a shop owner tell me to get out with that bike. Even fast food places, I take it in. Also on my Butterfield solo Double for dinner I took my bike into Ruby's Diner and parked it where I could keep my eye on it. They didn't even blink.

Unless the ride is more than 60 miles, traffic lights are generally my only rests. Even then, I'll track stand if I can.

I don't take breaks. Last week I rode about 106 mi and with the exception of 2-3 traffic lights and one, 2-min stop to pee and refill my water bottles, I never unclipped. I prefer to keep moving as long as I have liquids.

If you didn't stop to pee, you'd always have liquids to carry.

we take too many breaks on our rides. then again, our breaks consist of drinking beers, playing with cats, shooting photos, drinking beers, practicing tricks, eating gelato, and drinking beers.

I try to stop as little as possible. Have done more than 100 miles without stopping. In groups it seems that stops are about 30-40 miles apart. Edit: when I first read the question, I saw it as how often do you stop for breakfast... I was thinking, "duh, you only have breakfast once silly noob":p

I only stop on group rides. When I'm solo I only stop at a drinking fountain to fill up and go.

Depends on the ride and my mood. Most of the time the wife and I will stop after a 10 mile warmup just to loosen up the legs. 5 minutes of walking around really helps to loosen up for the rest of the ride.

But then I've stopped after 70 on a century but usually every 20. On GMR I've done it with one or two stops depending on who I'm riding with. If I'm alone, I'll stop at the village for 5 minutes then head back.

It's really a do what you feel and who cares what the others think type issue!:D

On the last double I did, the first stop was at I think 105 miles. We made two stops after that, not counting waiting for flat tires to be changed...

i think this all boils down to.....stop when YOU need to stop, just dont let the break be too long. everyone is different as to how many and when they break.

:D It was the Solvang fall double; I was with the lead group until the first major climb up Tempesquet (I don't consider Foxen to be a major climb), about 60 miles in. There wasn't even any question of stopping at the first stop in Sisquoc, we just hammered past. Oh, now that I think about it, I did stop for a minute at the stop on the 166, to talk to someone briefly. I was no longer with the lead group, and rode most of the 166 by myself until I was caught by the next group (of 4) and rode the rest of the way with them. The lead group finished about an hour ahead of us, and were all changed and cleaned up and done eating when we got in, but at least it was before dark... Alas, I don't think I'll be doing any doubles this year until racing season is over. I should be able to do the fall Solvang double again if I'm not burned out.

Come ride the fall Solvang Double with ME, Steve....:D You'll have a whole different experience and you'll discover the joy of llamas and breaks (definition: stopping and getting off bike for more than 30 seconds).
