I'm building a custom frame that houses a bench seat and a steering wheel. I'm cutting apart four bike frames (two on either side) and interconnecting framework between them (a pedal powered coup essentially). So, on the frame where the rider pedals, I need a hub with a normal cassette (7-9 gear, whatever) and a fixed gear on the other side of the hub to connect with the other frame running to the wheel. For this section, I can't have a wheel or spokes, it's just used to link up with the second bike that has wheel.
I've seen wheels like this in use on real bikes so I know they exist but, I have no idea where to get one without the entire bike. Any suggestions? Can I make one of these simply using a normal wheel and cassette?
Another problem: I'm trying to keep all gears on both bikes so, the fixed gear needs to have the same number of teeth as the sprocket on the second bike. I was planning to use a tandem sprocket (the second one with gears on both sides so the chain running from the first bike will link up with it and not effect the second bike's gearing). Will that crank and stuff fit in a normal frame? Can I take a normal crank/sprocket and attach a small fixed gear to connect with the first frame? This is a problematic project but will be quite rewarding to cruse around in. I have the tig and fab skills to get it done, I just need help from some bike experts. ;)
