My roommate has a 56cm '08 Conquest Pro that he races for 'cross and is now wanting to race for road season. The problem is that as we were trying to swap out components this morning, we found that there isn't much clearance between the 46t chainring and the chainstay. Does anybody know what the maximum chainring size is that could be fitted on, without the obvious solution of getting a different bottom bracket? Would a 50t fit, thus making a compact setup?

I fit a 50t on my 58cm Conquest Pro, but only serving as an outer ring of a double. Wouldn't fit as a single.
