View Full Version : Biker from sunny Costa Rica

After reading a few threads, I wanted to introduce myself to this community.

Living in Costa Rica, I have been fortunate to take many long rides in the country, on the beach or even dared to do some downhill extreme riding. There is never a short supply of areas to ride.

I look forward to sharing ideas with other forum members on how to improve this experience.

Ride safe,

Richard

Hello Richard, there are at least three BF members in Costa Rica! The gentleman (Joe Gardner) who founded this site, his wife (Shadiyah), and also crtreedude.

What bikes do you own and ride?

Welcome to BF!

Thank you for your reply.

I ride a Vespa and have a 1978 Schwinn in the garage. It even has a orange flag on the back. Pure old school.

I think it is time for an upgrade.

In addition, I think that it is great that the founder of the site lives in Costa Rica. Allow me to say to Mr. Gardner, PURA VIDA!

Richard

I am sure that he has taken advantage of the bike path in Sabana Park.

Hi Richard,

No, I have never been riding in the Central Valley - I spend most of my time dodging chickens.

Well, Joe doesn't YET live in Costa Rica - but soon, very soon. They will be near neighbors of us (a mere 12 kilometers - out here, that is neighbors)

Another great place to ride is around lake arenal.

Richard,

That is my stomping grounds - I live out of Gringolandia, but if I cross the mountain, I have that very scenic cruise around the lake. Also, Tom's German Bakery is like a magnet to my stomach, making me willing to ride up and over 3,000 feet of mountain on rocky dirt roads to get there... After all, when I do get there, I can eat ANYTHING - and generally do.

What a fine reward after a tough ride.

The hard part is getting back on the bike after such a great meal.

You got to be kidding - no way am I a Yankee... :D

That's Mr. Yankee to you!

Welcome Richard! Watch out for CRTreedude. I just do not trust him. He calls people mean names.

Pshaw - he can judge for himself and see you are picking on poor defenseless me... That would be Senior Yankee...

Hi Richard (and CRTreedude).

Are you in San Jose? I'll be doing research in San Jose (actually Curidabat) for the next few months (starting next week) and look forward to riding as much as possible, but don't really know what opportunities there will be. So far my biking in CR has been limited to a lovely day along the coast in Limon.

Richard is in the Central Valley from what I can tell - I am about 3 hours north of it.

I think we have lots of people with personality on the list - after all, you sort of have to be a character I assume to be so obsessed about bikes...

Wow! We could have another international meet and greet :D .

Huerro, I take it that you'll have internet access?

You know, if we stage it right, we could ride through Costa Rica and have places to stay... We have about 500 acres, I know we can put people somewhere... ;)

Also, during this time a year, we could have a wonderful time riding MTBs.

Currently I live in Rohrmoser. 10 minutes outside of San Jose.

I wish I lived on a small farm in the country.

Any thoughts about the feasibility of commuting in the burbs around San Jose? I'm going to be living in San Pedro and working mostly in the archives in Curridabat, but probably a little bit in the National Museum and National Library as well.

I've been up and down the Avenida Central on the bus many times and won't be riding it, but I didn't get much of a chance to explore anything else. would commuting be a death wish?

And East Hill, if we do an international meet up will you be coming down to join us?

I keep getting all these invitations :p .

I would love to (I'm thinking about birding opportunities, orchid explorations, just plain cool stuff), but I have trips to California, Oregon, and Hawaii this summer, so my travel plate is fairly full. I've been invited to Dallas for beer, pizza, and wrenching, too!

DanG East Hill - I read that and saw Wenching, not Wrenching and thought - "but isn't she a woman?"

I am not sure - I do know someone from there who told me it can be a bit dangerous around San Pedro, but that is a relative statement. Crime has definitely risen in the last 6+ years in Costa Rica in the Central Valley.

Out here, riding a bike is wonderful - but San Pedro is Pura Ciudad.

Yes, but USAZorro sometimes allows me to borrow his swashbuckle, so I suppose I could do wenching in a pinch. I do prefer manhandling, though ;) .

You should look into san ramon de tres rios. It is a little bit up the hill from san pedro and you will get the same sensation of the country life. Fresh air and beautiful views.

Do not live in san jose. It can be a little scary at night and loud in the mornings.

Good luck.

Some days I wish all we had was a small farm too... but it is nice to be reforesting about 2 square kilometers (so far).

It looks like you own a Call Center - sounds interesting.

It has interesting moments.

I am a student of rhetoric and a telemarketing professor. At least it is not boring.

Still, I would rather be on a long ride than a long phone call...

I was once (not long ago) one of the leading experts in recording phone calls. I have since stopped doing this but it still rattles around in my head.

RichardBlank

The Jerky Boys made some good recorded calls as well.

I am sure that yours were professional, not a joke.

Oh, sorry! I shall tuck that information away in the back of my unused mind space, and remember it for the future!

Yes, it's an important distinction, and an upgrade.

At least twice as much money I will have you know. ;) Having a squad of Marines standing over you with Machineguns at ready is an experience I could have done without though. Shall we just say that 3 weeks after 9-11-2001 people were a Tad touchy?
