I just lucked out and got a Smith helmet (black, medium) that will be perfect for next winter's commute for 45 dollars, 52 shipped. Adjustable vents, removable and washable padding.
Keep your eyes open for helmet deals on steepandcheap.com. I've seen a lot of skiing/snowboarding helmets on their site lately.

They have quite a few styles. How about posting a link. Also, how much does it weigh? While riding in the drops how does the back of the helmet feel?
This is the helmet, but it was at www.steepandcheap.com for $45 in gloss black.

Thanks Goalie. I got the Giro Fuse Snowboard Helmet. It is rated for CPC safety and has vents that close to block out the rain etc. There's room to add reflectivity on the top and sides.

After some commutes with my Smith Premise helmet, I have to say I am convinced. The venting system makes it easy to stay the right temp, and I like not having to wear a hat under my helmet.
Reporting on both helmet threads....
Reporting back this morning was 28F and clear. Next to no car noise...no annoying wind noise
The Giro Fuse kept my ears warm even on the faster decents (over 20mph). About half way into work, I started getting a sharp pain in the right temple. An ear plug that I didn't bother to use was wedged between my nogen and the helmet. :D
The vents were closed and I used a microfiber liner. Arrived warm, with soaked head.
