View Full Version : Uncle
Okay, I've been riding fixed for a couple years now, commuting, and pushing these big gears, namely 53/16, and I've thought anyone riding less is daft. Well, I'm crying "uncle." Just for kicks I dug through my engagement rings and found a 48t, and paired it up with my 17t, and took off for work. My legs never felt better, and my knees. Kin'A, it was a bodacious ride, great spinning to keep the BTUs up in the 30F weather, rain, and a bit of snow. I'm not saying I'm mothballing the 53/16, I still like that gearing, and it's great cuising in the flats. But for the run to work and back I think I've found something that might work for now.

I am comfortable with three ratios:
July-Nov 48x16
Nov.-Dec 42x16
Dec- March 38x16
April - June 42 x 16
I now have a 15 tooth cog so I will have to play with that.
Just an update on the riding I've been doing with this setup. I love it. My time is off by two - three minutes than with the big gears but my spin is better, and climbing better, and over all I'm really off like two miles an hour average speeds, because of the climbing. Know this will all go to hell when the snow finally flies. But for now: ROCK ON.
