Foo - Why are people televising their colonoscopies?

Ugh, second time in a row today some national news station or local news station is televising GI endoscopies. It is just out of my circle of care to see diverticula and other things in a news anchor's dirt chute as live video footage.

Is March a month dedicated to ****** now or what?

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

The death rate from colon cancer has plummeted due to the early detection made possible by a colonoscopy.

Actually, it is meant to be informative. Many people still die needlessly from colon cancer, because they don't want to have people laugh at them for having a colonoscopy...:( .

That isn't to say that televised colonoscopies aren't an island of such, of course.

cus the people dumb enough to watch tv are dumb enough to watch somebody's ass get probed? i guess we're slowly evolving into aliens.... when do i get my green anus stick?

Maybe it is the same people that have their father in law and neighbors in the labor room with a video cameras?

Actually, I think they are all recorded when you get a colonoscopy, just not broadcast.

I know that at that time NOBODY can be full of S*** since there is a ritual of laxatives and liquids the day/night before that is best done when there are no plans to be more than 15 feet from a toilet.

The procedure itself is easy, and the peace of mind that there are no polyps in there waiting to turn cancerous is priceless.

For some of you, the process may change by the time you need the test, but from what I have heard the worst part (preparation) will remain the same. The virtial colonoscopy is on the way, but it still requires an empty system to work most effectively.

I take the position that if someone lives long enough they will get some form of cancer, and reducing risk sis real easy in this case.

And now back to discussing colo-rectal visions. :)

Lest anyone in here is nervous about having a colonoscopy, I can assure you that the procedure is completely painless (except for the stick for the IV, but if you can't take that, then you should probably just give up). And, the drugs are incredible:D. Even the prep isn't that bad- there a number of different ones available- even pills, so it's not like you need to drink a gallon of salty diluted raspberry juice anymore. And the "experience" on the john isn't a big deal- just a few completely painless visits and you're done.

Trust me, it's absolutely no big deal.

You haven't lived till you've taken your Grandmother for a colonoscopy. Happened to me. Whats worse is I had to be in the room because my grandma didn't speak english and the doctors required me to translate for them. Somehow my dad was "busy" that day and it fell to me. It was embarassing, but I loved my grandma. She died of cancer anyways as she should have gone for the procedure about ten years earlier, but getting a colonoscopy is important.

Funny, but I also had to be there when my Grandad was being taken to the hospital when he was old and dieing too. Also had to get him dressed from the nude. He died of cancer as well. Grandpa's balls and Grandma's bowels. Excellent info for Foo.

Thanks for the very kind words. I just do what I have to for the people I love. That goes for family and those I consider my chosen family, good friends.

I've taken family to the medical Roto-Rooter facility and back. Here in Austin, they seem to have it down to 2-3 hours for the complete exam, factoring out the colon blow preparations the night before.

What age should start getting the exam? I always have the fear of an intracolonic explosion in the back of my mind.

I've taken family to the medical Roto-Rooter facility and back. Here in Austin, they seem to have it down to 2-3 hours for the complete exam, factoring out the colon blow preparations the night before.

What age should start getting the exam? I always have the fear of an intracolonic explosion in the back of my mind.

Age 50 is the recommended start, unless you have reason to believe that you should start sooner (ie, family history of colon cancer, polyps, etc.).
