Recreational & Family - Trek 7300fx vs Cannondale Adventure 400

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm looking for a hybrid bike for my wife and I and have narrowed down the search between the Trek 7300fx and Cannondale Adventure 400. Has anyone owned either one of these bikes, and what has been your experience with them?

As you can see from my post on this topic, I recently purchased a Trek 7500fx, which is pretty similar to the 7300fx. I really love the feel of the bike. I have test-ridden an Cannondale Adventure bike and liked the feel of that bike as well. She needs to ride both and see which one she likes and fits on best. If I recall, the 'Dale is also set up to take panniers front and rear. Both are excellent choices and very popular.

Why did you choose the 7500FX over the 7300FX?

Trek makes the very best bikes for the $$$. There is a reason they are the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world.

I just got my wife the Trek 7.5FX WSD. Installed a Cateye wireless speedometer on it. Took it for a spin around the neighborhood to check the brakes and gearing; make sure the LBS had everything just right. Fun ride. Upright position, a little cramped for me but perfect for my wife. Smaller brake levers, women's saddle, two-sided pedals allow for either street shoes or spd cleats. The wheels and tires are very nice, 700 x 32c. This baby will move!
You can put on a rack in the back as well as on the front, make it into a tourer. You can add fenders, too. I just may have to get the last 7500FX they've got for myself.

I took off the wheel reflectors but left the bell. That actually comes in handy on the MUPs.
Isn't the 7500FX last years model? How much are they going for if you can find one? Just curious, because it looks like I'll just read about bikes for another six months till I finally break down and buy one.

Price on the 2005 7500 FX was $659; could probably get a deal on it as the 7.5FX lists for $689.

On both Trek and Cannondale you are paying a premium price. Other companies have compatible bikes for many bucks less. I would ride many including Jamis and Specialized.

I've had my 7300fx for about a month now. It is a great bike, lightweight, easy shifting, and comfortable enough seat and pedaling. I am new to the whole cycle scene having last ridden a bike when I was 21 (now 55). I ride my bike 4-miles each day to and from work. On the weekends I ride between 40-50 miles. If you get a Trek 7300fx you won't be disappointed.

The original date on this thread was 2003. The 7300fx is now the 7.3fx and the new one is comparable to the older 7500fx, which is now the 7.5fx.
My 7.3fx cost $429 at the Trek store and has full Deore and a chromoly fork. Basically the same components that the older 7500fx used to have.
It IS a sweet bike...very versatile and comfortable. I highly recommend it, as I did before.

Keep in mind that the C-dale has a frame that is handmade in the USA, while the Trek will have a Chinese made frame. May or may not matter to you.

Yes, IIRC they're made in the Giant factory, along with Specialized and a bunch of other manufacturers.

I recently purchased a Cannondale Adventure 400 feminine S. I had also looked at the Trek 7300 and 7.3 fx. I decided to purchase the Cannondale because the ride was smooth and the couldn't price couldn't be beaten, a brand new 2005 model for $400.00. At this price, I could afford a few extras! I Love the bike so far.
