Starting in May, the Internal Revenue Service will be delivering tax rebate checks for qualified individuals. Do you have any plans for yours? Saving it? Spending spree as Best Buy?

It will help finance that years underpayment. Much prefer to spend it on bike stuff. I did compensate myself for being the tax preparer by buying a new helmet.

I'm tempted to save it all. Only thing is, that kind of defeats the purpose of this tax rebate. So in the interest of being a patriot, I may have to spend some time on NewEgg :). If I invested the money in my mutual funds, wouldn't that help the economy as well?

I am not a hard core conservative, but I will stare in shock at the check, pondering the folly of pushing the federal deficit another $114 billion in to the red, put $300 in savings, $200 as an extra payment towards my student loans, and $100 towards a B&M IQ Fly generator light. It's an LED model and way brighter than what I currently have. My bike is my car and so I do not consider brighter lights to be a frivolous purchase.

Yea, we're definitely not being taxed at or near the rate of socialism. I believe in 2004, 28% of our income went toward tax. In the same year, well over 40% went for tax in some European countries. I do agree with your point that we're not getting what we should be getting for the amount we pay.

+1. I wouldn't mind a 25% VAT just like Sweden if it got us some of the following:

City infrastructure revamp. Most cities need exit paths for evacuation, other than roads (which will turn into parking lots.) I remember when Houston was evacuated for a hurricane Rita, people were still stuck in traffic as the thing hit. Evacuation means paths and rail... new tollways like they are trying to push in Austin by converting existing roads are not it.

Money spent on fusion research. Of course, solar and wind are great, but are just toys when compared to actual energy needs. What really is needed for the future is sustainable fusion reactions on a large scale, and I just haven't seen much progress in this field other than a new tokamak or two popping up, or some people stuffing tritium in an existing tokamak which makes it permanently radioactive, but they claim to get better results. In fact, I've not really seen much innovation in this field (other than an incremental upgrade or a slight design change) since when I was a kid and they had pictures of fusion magnetic containment fields right next to the pictures of the space stations people would be living in and the flying cars.

Thermal depolymerization. Waste goes in one side, it gets shredded and boiled, out comes crude. Crude oil isn't just needed for Jane Cellphone-yapper to drive her kids to the soccer game in the H2. Its a vital part of plastics and building.

Heh Heh. Don't do it!!! They will turn your car inside out and leave it to rot!!!

Not much. I'm phased out completely. I'm also phased out from any student loan deduction, despite paying thousands of dollars of interest per year. Uncle Sam thinks you're rich any time you are within spitting distance of 100k. What a friggin' joke. Expect your standard of living to go down even further when we start re-distributing wealth to pay for other people's healthcare.

How about a loan to pay for food? Eggs rose 40% last year.

You have to be a hard core conservative to wonder how it helps the U.S. economy to borrow billions (more) from China to provide an incentive to Americans to buy more shiny new things from China?

People need to keep in mind we are being taxed at a rate close to
socialism but instead of education and healthcare we are funding
the mass murder of people for corporate interests. I personally
dont care about the deficit or feel the slightest bit of guilt taking
back what was stolen from me in the first place. Why not tell
people what they need to contribute out of their checks , whatever
that figure might be, and let them decide what they are going to
fund ? Ill gladly offer my 33% if it goes to bettering humanity,
not blowing it up.

Man, you must be a miserable person.

Don't forget the $42 million they used to send out notices about the refund that most of us had already heard about. For the others who might have not heard about it, I doubt there are many of those who would question getting a check from the IRS---I'm sure they'd take it.

Savings. Bush & Co want us to spend it, so, I'm saving it.

I think the plan will have a lot of benefit for China's economy.

We already spent our "rebate" on one of these (http://www.acura.com/assets/acura/carshot/tl/2008/carshot_tl_2008_whitediamondpearl_NH-603P.jpg). That should jump start the economy. :D

You got me drooling now.

I wish there were a way Rohloff can come down on price on those so they are competitive with XTR, or even XT drivetrains without killing quality. However, I much rather eventually pay $1200 for something that is almost flawless, than pick up something at half the price which would grind to a halt after 5000 miles and need replacing.
